< Back 04 GG Vol. 22. 2. 10. The opposite reception of randomness in AAA and indie game sectors 17 GG Vol. 24. 4. 10. You can see the Korean version of this article at below URL: www.gamegeneration.or.kr It seems fascinating that the same mathematical phenomenon could become the foundation of the most acclaimed and the most despised design principles of modern gaming. As I will argue in this article, this is precisely what happened to randomness. Even though randomness has always been a part of game development, it could be argued that it has exploded in popularity over the last decade. In many ways, we live in a golden age of randomness in games. To understand some of the observations made in the later parts of this article, we have to start with a critical distinction between perceived and objective randomness. Perceived randomness deals with our ability to recognize patterns. If an event in the game feels as if it happened "out of the blue," or if it seems that it could just as well not appear in a second playthrough, we may classify it as random. Needless to say, the fact something feels entirely erratic for us does not mean the developer didn't carefully plan it. In contrast, objective randomness is the real deal – objectively random things are genuinely random, regardless of our knowledge. Many positive and negative sides of randomness stem from the difference between perceived and objective randomness. For example, even though achieving genuine randomness on computers has always been a challenge, programmers did not have to worry about it too much because all they had to achieve was an appearance of randomness. Designers of old recreations of casinos (such as Casino Kid for the NES) did not have to worry about genuine randomness because all that mattered was that the game delivered a decent casino-like experience. Things started to be much more problematic once gambling-like mechanics began to be combined with actual currency purchases. The combination of randomness and microtransactions leads us to the dark side of our story of randomness in modern game design. The most well-known illustration of the problem comes from the debate on lootboxes that took gaming by storm seven years ago. When EA launched its sequel to Star Wars Battlefield II, the company surely did not expect the backlash from the players who were unhappy with how important lootboxes became to the gameplay. It suffices to point out that the Reddit post about the game received the dubious accolade of being the most downvoted message on any of over 100 thousand subforums. The upshot of this scandal was that some European countries introduced legal measures to limit or even ban loot boxes from games as the legislators started to see games as casinos in disguise. Many game developers decided to change their games and replace lootboxes with other systems, such as season passes (Overwatch 2). Other companies revealed the odds for loot boxes, forcing them to show how low these odds really were. Despite all these actions, random mechanics that function identically to loot boxes (even though they do not use the same visual representation) are very prominent, especially in so-called gacha games that started to be a global phenomenon around after the launch of Genshin Impact. It is also worth remembering that revealing the odds cannot be seen as a silver bullet – the odds of dice or roulette are clear for everybody to see, but it does not make these games unproblematic. As I mentioned, people criticizing lootboxes mainly focused on their similarity to gambling. Even though this comparison is sometimes warranted, it obfuscates two crucial differences that make randomness in games even more problematic than in casinos. The first problem comes from the so-called "gambler's fallacy," which boils down to a sentiment that the more you lose in a game of chance, the more likely you are to win finally. Ideally, the feeling should go away once you realize that it can't be true – the next flip of a coin does not "know" that all the previous flips were unlucky. Still, many rational people cannot shake the feeling that "luck has to finally come," which leads them to continue spending. What is strange about digital games is that this feeling may actually be rational, so the risk of people spending more money on subsequent draws is bigger. Developers who fear the loss of unlucky players may easily introduce "pity mechanics" that guarantee a valuable drop. It is also fairly common to control the drops the players get during initial sections of the game as the creators want to be sure the player gets the intended, optimal experience before they are thrown in at the deep end of randomness. The second problem relates to the so-called "sunken cost fallacy". Gamblers who lost a lot in a given game of chance may continue losing because they treat their loss as an investment. They feel that stopping during an unlucky streak confirms it was unlucky – in their mind, stopping almost "makes" the streak unlucky. This sentiment is entirely irrational in traditional games of chance, but online games make it possible for developers to target specific players. Some developers openly advise mobile game creators to target their big spenders to offer them special deals or even change the whole game to their liking. What it means in practice is that spending a lot (even if it is losing) can be treated as an investment by some players, who could then feel entitled to get special treatment from the creators. If I focused only on the so-called AAA and Free2play industries, the dark patterns described above would have been the only topic of my article. And yet, during the same decade, the phenomenon of randomness became the central mechanism of games created by independent developers as well. What is fascinating, though, is that it was used in a completely different way that did not result in heated ethical debates. On the contrary, it can be pointed out as the main reason for the origin of new popular genres, such as open-world survival games, and the resurgence of old genres, such as roguelikes. It can be argued that randomness and the success of modern indie games go hand-in-hand. What is the reason randomness is so popular with independent developers? It seems that it comes from a very lucky confluence of several factors. The chief reason is that employing randomness helps to cut development costs. Independent game developers do not create their games in a vacuum and must adapt to new game habits and expectations of players conditioned on big-budget games. Their games couldn't compete in production values, but they could offer the players value for money differently. For example, they could promise much better replayability, a wider variety of power-ups and weapons, or bigger open worlds. As it happens, all of these advantages could be gained through skillful usage of randomness. Even though roguelike games are one of the oldest genres in gaming (the original Rogue dates to 1980), they functioned as a dormant, niche genre for almost 30 years just to gain mainstream popularity during the last decade. The main reason for this unusual trajectory was that the developers deconstructed the genre and infused many other genres with roguelike randomness. Two games that paved the way for this development were Spelunky (2008) and The Binding of Isaac (2011). Before the release of these games, roguelikes were often treated as very rigid wholes. They had to contain perma-death, random environments, and loot, but, more importantly, they had to belong to the RPG genre. The roguelike revolution happened when people realized that there is nothing that prevents us from using the same type of randomness in virtually any genre. Random environment generation became the foundation for another hugely successful genre – survival games that followed the release of Minecraft. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons for their popularity was the novel mechanic of crafting and survival, which existed in older games only in a simplified and secondary manner. Still, we should not disregard how much randomness helped to popularize the genre. Independent games' budget limitations prevented developers from creating games in specific genres. Making an open-world game similar to GTA or Skyrim with small resources is challenging. The same goes for live service games that must be constantly updated and maintained. Procedurally generated worlds and the early access model popularized by Minecraft solved these problems for independent developers and allowed them to deliver experiences that could compete with AAA development regarding sales and player engagement. Even though procedurally generated worlds cannot compete with handcrafted ones in terms of intricate detail or authenticity, they can easily surpass them with scale, promising infinite explorability. On the other hand, games that use randomness to ensure no two play sessions are the same do not have to worry about players becoming hungry for new content. The ease of production extends to more liberal design practices, making game development more manageable for small teams. Having an unlucky or lucky run in roguelike games is part of the experience, and nobody expects the developers to make sure every draw of luck is "fair" or balanced. In fact, having situations that seem broken from the design standpoint (that are too overpowered or helpless) can often contribute to the games' popularity on streaming services. Many streamers seek extreme, unique situations, and randomness is the mechanism that is here to deliver. To sum up, the popularity of randomness in the current gaming industry and the two extreme ways it is treated may be initially surprising but is far from a coincidence. It can be explained once we look at how randomness contributed to analog games in the past. Throwing dice or sticks, shuffling cards, etc., are very old mechanics used across the globe to add the effect of surprise and replayability. They allowed simple rule sets to be used for hundreds of years. At the same time, the same actions could be easily misused whenever we make them the central mechanic and turn entertainment into gambling. To recover it — to know who you are — you would first turn to the records your past self left behind. Diaries, photographs, social media posts, messenger logs: we live leaving countless records of ourselves. And every record is a curated memory. A “record,” written with the intent of preserving some fact for later, differs from the traces we leave without meaning to. A shoe sole worn down along the inner edge, by a habit of putting weight on the inside of the foot, is a trace, not a record. Unlike records, into which intention and interpretation enter from the moment of their making, traces arise outside intention and are not usually treated as objects of interpretation. The trace is, by birth, humbler than the record. Yet a trace can sometimes describe its owner more faithfully than any record. Records can be written to deceive, but a trace, possessed of physical substance, is honest. For someone who has lost their memory, then, the surest clues to who they are may lie not in a diary or a feed but among the objects of the room they once lived in. Even if need and taste — intentions, both — govern our first decision to own a thing, with time the thing itself becomes our trace, because the relationship between object and owner keeps being renegotiated beyond its original terms. A trace is born of that relationship, lodges in the object, and changes with the years. This grants traces a self-sustaining life that records lack. As Walter Benjamin put it in “Unpacking My Library,” the essay he wrote while sorting his own books: “Not that they come alive in him; it is he who lives in them.” [1] This vitality, hidden from our awareness most of the time, erupts without warning whenever we set out to consciously change how we relate to our things. To redefine a relationship with an object is to judge its worth anew. Keep it, or let it go? Within reach and in view, or into a corner? To ground the judgment we ask again: Do I still need this? How long have I had it? How did I use it? When, and how, did it come to be mine? Reading traces this way, we summon memories from the unconscious. Anyone who has sorted moving boxes or attempted a deep clean knows how the tidying falls by the wayside once the memories attached to some object take over. Unpacking , an organizing game released in 2021, gathers exactly those moments into the shape of one person’s life. * Each completed stage adds a photo to the album. To organize is to bring what is scattered or disordered into order, and humans have evolved to find in this act not just psychological calm but real pleasure. Little else, in fact, fits the form of play so well. For Johan Huizinga, who gave us the concept of Homo Ludens, play is an activity freely entered into yet governed by strictly binding rules, accompanied by the pleasure of absorption. Organizing in daily life falls outside play only because it is labor rather than something done for fun — it belongs to the sphere of ordinary life. Still, organizing and play have shared more than one property across their long histories, and the emergence of an “organizing game” genre feels natural enough. Browse the games under Steam’s “Organizing” tag and you find “Puzzle” and “Relaxing” attached alongside — A Little to the Left , A Storied Life: Tabitha , and Whisper of the House are representative. Organizing as a game, in other words, is understood as the pleasure of solving puzzles with set answers, enjoyed in comfort, without score-chasing or overly elaborate rules. Unpacking , too, is classed as a puzzle game. Unboxing your belongings in a new home and finding each thing its place: that is the whole of play. Not every object has one exact spot, so players are free to decorate to taste, but things do have their proper kinds of space according to use, and a minimum of rules must be honored. As the stages progress, the boxes multiply and the homes grow larger, and the sorting grows more involved. Yet Unpacking designs its organizing as something more than puzzle plus decoration. Here, the play of organizing is the work of composing memory and identity through objects — through traces. Unpacking tells one person’s life, from childhood to making a home of her own, entirely through her things. The protagonist moves at each of life’s turning points: the first room of her own, a college share house, early working life, moving in with a partner for the first time, the return to her parents’ home after a breakup, a new love and a new place. The player is given only the year of each move and the changing inventory of possessions. Complete a stage, take the photo, and a brief reflection appears — a remark on the new home, the mood of moving day — but nothing concrete about who she is. * Belongings pulled at random from their boxes, not yet put away. (Screenshot by the author) The player has no part in the packing. Each new stage opens on an unfamiliar home stacked with boxes, and the player must unpack like someone who has lost her memory. Across the two decades from 1997 to 2018, possessions persist, disappear, or newly appear, and from these traces the player comes to infer who the protagonist is and what she has lived through. In 2010, she moves into her boyfriend’s apartment — her first time living with a partner. Wedging her things in among his, you register the difference in taste. He plays guitar; he brews his own coffee. In 2012, after the breakup, she returns to her parents’ home. The pushpin through his face in a photograph suggests it did not end well. Yet the ukulele and the drip coffee she took up through him remain her hobby and her taste. That the ukulele, the songbooks, and the coffee gear keep reappearing from the 2010 stage onward is, by itself, enough for the player to surmise the course of a life. * A living room that shows the protagonist’s tastes. (Screenshot by the author) Consider the objects that recur from the very first stage. She draws for a living. That she goes on using the art-supply brand of her childhood well into her professional career suggests firm tastes and confidence in them. The stuffed pig she carried around until its seams gave out shows the same stubbornness: her model since childhood, it becomes the hero of the picture book she publishes once she is an author. The pig is not the only thing she cannot let go once she has loved it. The sketchbooks of her school days and her favorite book series claim shelf space in every home she moves to. The video games and board games that multiply with every move are her oldest hobby, and when she buys what she loves she collects the whole set — the disposition of a collector. Yet imagining her life is no part of the puzzle. The sole condition for advancing is putting things where they belong. Even so, the player is drawn, irresistibly, into inference. You cannot know what a box holds or in what order its contents will emerge, so each item, as it comes out, has to be looked at and appraised. In doing so the player comes to remember the objects — to recognize what recurs and what has newly arrived. There are plenty of ways to make this an explicit element of play: have players deduce the story toward a correct answer, or gather key clues. Many organizing and puzzle games build their narrative exactly so. A Storied Life: Tabitha , framed around sorting a late grandmother’s belongings, has you restore a memoir from clues gathered while tidying; Whisper of the House brings in NPC dialogue and a layer of mystery — “anomalies” — to make its story legible. As the puzzle of organizing joins with narrative, objects become things to interpret, and organizing becomes the act of examining them. * The memoir screen of A Storied Life: Tabitha . ⓒSecret Mode Here is where Unpacking parts ways with other organizing games. Between organizing in life and organizing in a game lies a difference of purpose beyond the question of voluntariness. When the discovery of narrative is posed as a game’s explicit goal, the placement of objects hardens from something to interpret into clue, into evidence. And then, paradoxically, the object is severed from the very memory and meaning it carries: a player whose first purpose is assembling the story strips from each thing only the meanings that fit the whole. But a human life as it is actually lived has no grand theme, no dramatic arc. Sorting through things in reality, we may recall the story lodged in each one, but binding them into a single narrative is impossible; we can only grope through scattered memories. And as Henri Bergson argued in Matter and Memory (1896), memory comes to us not as a text with every detail preserved but as a collection of partial images. Objects, as elements of those images, summon whatever is associated with them, indiscriminately. The memories we meet while organizing appear before us just so — unannounced. What makes the play of Unpacking distinctive is that it realizes this real-world mechanism by which organizing and memory are joined. In organizing games, the owner of the things is always a fictional other. The player holds no memories of the objects to be sorted. And yet the player can assemble, however faintly, the protagonist’s self — as if holding memories of her, or as if recovering memories that were lost. Finding places for objects, with no explicit narrative at all, turns out to be enough. For memory does not dwell only in us; it dwells also in the things with which we have kept relation. Let me borrow Benjamin’s reverie once more: “Everything remembered and thought, everything conscious, becomes the pedestal, the frame, the base, the lock of his property. The period, the region, the craftsmanship, the former ownership — for a true collector the whole background of an item adds up to a magic encyclopedia whose quintessence is the fate of his object.” [2] Organizing in Unpacking , then, is leafing through the encyclopedia written of its protagonist. Just as reading an encyclopedia does not deliver the world entire, finishing the tidying does not tell you exactly who she is. Everything remains conjecture. This loose mode of understanding is written into the game’s flexible rules mentioned above: no object has one fixed and final place. Which is why we, in reality, keep organizing too. Finding the right place admits no correct answer, and so the task never ends — not for our things, and not for ourselves. Sort through the overflow, and through the memories that surface with it, and you may at least arrive at a fair guess at who you are. Farming games are often categorized as “healing games.” Unlike competitive or combat-oriented games that demand tension and urgency, managing a farm offers a peaceful and modest rhythm of life—quite literally, a pastoral existence. Neither the corn growing in the fields nor the cows grazing in the pasture pose any threat to the player. They simply grow under the player’s care, while the player remains an observer of that growth. Before I experienced farming firsthand, I too consumed farming games as part of the “healing” genre. However, after leaving the city to live in a remote mountain village, experiencing rural society, and cultivating crops myself, I came to realize that the gap between farming in games and farming in reality was far greater than I had imagined. Of course, some distance between games and reality is inevitable. Yet through actual farming, I began to notice which aspects of agricultural labor had been removed, simplified, or rearranged in order to become game mechanics. In doing so, I came to better understand how the sense of “healing” in farming games is constructed in the first place. Learning Farming Through Games What follows is a story drawn from my own experience with farming. After leaving city life behind and moving to a remote mountain village, I was given access to a small vegetable garden near my home. When I dug into the soil, I found several earthworms wriggling beneath the surface, a sign that the earth was fertile and alive. It seemed too good a plot of land to leave untouched, so I decided to try farming for myself. In games, I had already spent dozens of virtual seasons cultivating vast fields as a seasoned farmer. In reality, however, I was a complete beginner who had never properly grown a plant before. In Stardew Valley , the farmer’s first task is to clear and prepare the land. I found myself doing much the same thing, almost as if I were following an in-game tutorial. Squatting in the field, I picked out stones by hand, removed weeds with a hoe, and loosened the soil with a shovel. Every so often, when the sharp edge of the hoe struck the earth, an earthworm living beneath the soil would suddenly spring upward. In those moments, I felt vividly that the land itself was alive. Once the groundwork had been laid, it was time to plant something. Ordinarily, I should have started with seeds, but instead I chose what felt like a kind of “boost item”: seedlings. Since seedlings have already passed the vulnerable seed stage, they are less likely to fail and grow more quickly once planted. The owner of the seedling shop advised me that beginners should start with leafy vegetables. I treated fruit-bearing crops like cucumbers and strawberries as though they were “high-difficulty crops” that had not yet been unlocked, and returned home carrying fifteen lettuce seedlings instead. April, with spring fully settled in, was the perfect season for planting lettuce. * In Stardew Valley, the player begins their first season by planting fifteen parsnips. Planting in Pixels vs. Making Ridges and Furrows After returning to the field, I wondered how I should arrange the fifteen seedlings. In Stardew Valley , one of the first tasks given to the player is to plant fifteen parsnip(a type of radish) seeds, a spring crop. The player equips a tool and transforms the “state” of each tile of land into arable soil, planting one seed per tile until all fifteen seeds have been sown. Most players tend to arrange their fields in symmetrical patterns such as 5×3 or 3×5 grids. They perceive this balanced pattern as a stable structure. Having spent so much time playing Stardew Valley , I had unconsciously internalized the habit of planting crops in neat, geometric patterns. So in my real vegetable garden, I arranged the lettuce seedlings in much the same way. The lettuce, too, was planted in a tidy 3×5 formation. Yet after only a few days, the garden began to resist the logic of the game. The lettuces lacked sufficient room for their leaves to spread. As the leaves pressed against one another, airflow became restricted, creating favorable conditions for pests and disease. Packed too closely together, the lettuces entered into a quiet struggle for survival, pushing against one another as they grew. To make matters worse, the lettuces planted in the middle row became almost impossible to manage because there was no space to reach them by hand. In the game, the player character can easily walk through crops, but in reality a farmer requires physical pathways to move through the field. Eventually, I realized that the logic of “one crop per tile” belonged to the grammar of games. In actual farming, the concepts of raised rows for planting and furrows left open for movement and drainage are more appropriate than the abstract grid of the game world. A single head of lettuce does not merely occupy one square of space; it requires a much larger ecological area that includes airflow, drainage, and accessibility for care. The simple grid-based rules presented by the game transformed, in reality, into a far more complex problem of ecological arrangement. * A lettuce field planted with sufficient spacing for growth. Source: Dragon Byeolbat Atelier blog Real Farming Treats Crop Damage as the Default Condition Even in such cramped conditions, the lettuces managed to grow surprisingly well. I carefully harvested a few leaves at a time and was able to enjoy the first yield. Wrapping rice and meat in freshly picked lettuce or making generous salads from the harvest, I found myself thinking that, in at least one respect, I had surpassed the farmers of farming games: actual cooking and eating. No matter how much lettuce I picked, it seemed to grow back endlessly, almost like an inexhaustible spring. But the joy of harvest did not last long. Only a few days later, when I stepped outside to water the garden, the field was empty. The places where the lettuces had stood had simply vanished. The lettuce had been there, and then it was gone. For a moment, it felt so strange that I wondered whether I had somehow walked into the wrong field. The culprit turned out to be roe deer. In retrospect, it must have looked irresistible to them. Compared to the tough wild grasses growing elsewhere, my garden was a perfect buffet filled with tender, soft lettuce leaves. In most farming games, fences function either as decorative elements or as optional structures. In Stardew Valley , crop damage occurs only as a minor event. If crops are planted outside the area protected by a scarecrow, one or two may disappear overnight after being eaten by crows. Farming Simulator does not meaningfully simulate pests or wild animals at all; weeds merely reduce crop yield slightly. Meanwhile, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin portrays insects, plant diseases, and weeds affecting rice cultivation in much greater detail. Yet even there, failure usually results only in lower quality or reduced harvests—the entire crop rarely dies outright. Reality, unlike these peaceful games, proved far harsher. Because I had not installed proper deer fencing, the lettuce patch disappeared almost overnight. In real farming, uncontrollable variables—wild animals, heat waves, monsoon rains, pests—can invade at any moment. Diseases and insects are capable of destroying an entire crop within weeks. Excessive heat or humidity quickly spoils plants, while a single heavy rainfall can rot their roots. Farmers therefore approach these threats not as rare accidents but as default conditions of agriculture. Farmers must treat these risks as the “default” and maintain their crops by mobilizing every possible countermeasure—fences, pesticides, fertilizers, and drainage systems—as a matter of course. Healing Becomes Possible Only When the Laboring Body Disappears After my lettuce patch was devastated by wild animals, I regrouped by planting several asak-i pepper plants, a crop suited for summer. Energized by the warmth of early summer, the peppers steadily extended their stems, bloomed, and seemed ready to bear fruit in abundance. Then one day, the green stems had turned black. Looking closer, I discovered dozens of stink bugs clinging tightly to the plants and sucking out their sap. Stink bugs do not immediately destroy the fruit, but they steal nutrients from the plant, weakening its growth and leaving the peppers stunted and unhealthy. I could have used pesticides, but many environmentally conscious farmers discouraged it. Instead, they advised me to remove the insects by hand. I filled half of a cut plastic bottle with water, held it beneath the pepper stems, and shook the clusters of bugs loose with my fingers so they would fall into the container. This had to be repeated every single day. Once the war against stink bugs subsided, slugs appeared in the humid summer weather and began gnawing at the peppers instead. Through this process, I confronted the physical pain of farming in a way games had never prepared me for. Standing outdoors for only a few minutes in midsummer was enough to leave my entire body drenched in sweat. Mosquitoes are inseparable from the farmer’s life. Summer fields are ideal environments for swarms of wild mosquitoes, and merely brushing against plants can leave ticks attached to one’s skin, feeding unnoticed on blood. The farmer in Stardew Valley wears a romantic outfit of straw hat and overalls; the real farmer dresses instead in survival gear—wide-brimmed hats, masks, arm sleeves, and scarves. In Stardew Valley , the player’s body is represented only through a “stamina gauge” tucked into the corner of the screen. Swinging a pickaxe or watering crops gradually depletes the gauge, and when it reaches zero, the character collapses from exhaustion. Yet after a single night’s sleep, their energy returns as though nothing had happened. Because labor in games is mediated through control devices, the player never experiences sweat running down their body, the sharp pain of an aching back, or the misery of insect bites. The “healing” offered by the game is made possible, paradoxically, by erasing the physical body of the laboring subject. Real farming does not end with a few clicks, nor does accumulated exhaustion disappear after a night’s sleep. These bodily limitations inevitably require external assistance. It is no coincidence that Farming Simulator derives much of its appeal from operating enormous tractors and combine harvesters. Modern agriculture has long depended on machines to shoulder workloads that the human body alone cannot endure. Looking at the reality of rural Korea, the machines that replace human bodies in aging farming communities are agricultural vehicles worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. The operation of these machines—and much of the difficult manual labor that machines cannot perform—is largely carried out by migrant workers. The polished vegetables sold in supermarkets are produced amid the noise of machinery and the sweat of migrant laborers, realities absent from healing games. Even the recently celebrated “smart farm” model moves toward eliminating unpredictable and painful forms of human labor in nature by entrusting temperature, humidity, and nutrient control to artificial intelligence and automated systems. Ultimately, the tranquility offered by farming games emerges through the removal of the painful physicality and labor structures that real farming inevitably entails. What remains is a carefully distilled experience that preserves only the satisfaction of harvest. The Farmer in Games Is Healed, While the Real Farmer Struggles to Survive We need to reconsider what we mean by the feeling of “healing.” Farming becomes healing in games not simply because of their pastoral settings, but because they remove and transform the complexity of real agriculture, reconstructing uncertain labor into “certain labor.” Real farming is a complex and unpredictable activity shaped by countless variables: climate, pests, labor conditions, market fluctuations, and more. The effort required to bring crops to harvest is physically demanding, painful, prolonged, and often accompanied by failure. Games, by contrast, are designed as a medium that minimizes discomfort and maximizes pleasure. If they were to reproduce the uncertainty and suffering of real farming in full, they would lose the core engine of “fun.” For this reason, games about agriculture inevitably simplify reality through processes of selection, omission, and exaggeration, reconstructing farming into a form that can be played. From this perspective, one might criticize farming games for concealing reality. Yet what matters is not whether reality is concealed, but rather how farming is structurally reorganized into an experience of healing. Once we become aware of this gap, the healing produced by farming games no longer appears as mere fantasy. Instead, it becomes an analytical point from which to rethink the conditions surrounding real agricultural labor. Paradoxically, perhaps modern people find healing in farming games precisely because their everyday lives are far more uncontrollable and unpredictable than the farming depicted in games. In contemporary labor environments—where effort often goes unrecognized and results remain uncertain no matter how hard one works—farming games offer a fair world in which labor reliably produces rewards. Plant seeds and water them, and crops will always grow. Harvest them, and money will always follow. The predictability and controllability created through this clean cycle of repetition may in fact constitute the true essence of the healing these games provide. But why, among so many possible forms, does this healing so often take the form of “farming”? Agriculture, humanity’s earliest productive activity, originally involved negotiation with nature and coexistence with uncertainty. Games, however, remove this uncertainty and remake agriculture into a controllable system. In this sense, farming games may reflect a modern fantasy—the desire to fully quantify, manage, and domesticate nature itself. At the same time, farming games evoke nostalgia for something we have lost: touching soil with our hands, planting seeds, and watching life grow. In urbanized modern life, most people no longer know where or how their food is produced. Farming games imaginatively restore this severed relationship. Ultimately, the healing offered by farming games is double-edged. On the one hand, it is a safe fantasy that erases the pain of real farming. On the other hand, it provides a fundamental sense of satisfaction through the direct connection between labor and reward—something many people rarely experience in everyday life. The experience of becoming a farmer in a game poses difficult questions to us: Why do we seek in games a satisfaction we cannot attain in reality? Why is our labor not connected to clear rewards in the way farming games promise? And might genuine healing arise not from eliminating uncertainty and suffering, but from learning to live with them? Such questions encourage us to move beyond simply consuming farming games and instead reflect on the desires for labor, nature, and healing that define our era. The gap between farming in games and farming in reality ultimately reveals both the world we currently inhabit and the world we long for. 1) Statista Research Department, Frequency of visiting museums/temporary exhibitions in France 2018, Published Dec 9, 2022 Tags:
