- [Interview] The Story of Digital Game Diversity & Accessibility and Making Books About it – Kyung-jin Lee, Diversity & Inclusion Director at Smilegate
In August 2024, Smilegate – one of the best-known South Korean game developers & publishers, published two books aimed at game developers, focusing on game accessibility and diversity. The first book, “게임 접근성 개념과 사례 (Concepts and Cases of Game Accessibility)”, explores the concept and current state of accessibility and diversity in South Korean games and case studies. It also delves deep into design approaches to ensure all players can fully enjoy games without restrictions. (Concepts and Cases of Content Diversity)”, introduces the idea of "cultural diversity" and examines how it has been implemented in South Korean media and games. < Back [Interview] The Story of Digital Game Diversity & Accessibility and Making Books About it – Kyung-jin Lee, Diversity & Inclusion Director at Smilegate 23 GG Vol. 25. 4. 10. ** You can see the Korean version of this article at this URL: https://www.gamegeneration.or.kr/article/181117cd-bed7-427a-bc3c-ecba6413a629 In August 2024, Smilegate – one of the best-known South Korean game developers & publishers, published two books aimed at game developers, focusing on game accessibility and diversity. For this special issue of GG, we spoke with Kyung-Jin Lee, Director of Smilegate’s Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) department, to discuss why the company emphasizes D&I and what this means for socially and commercially in game productions. Editor: Thank you for coming. One of the reasons we wanted to interview you was to highlight what Korean game companies are taking action regarding game accessibility and diversity. Smilegate has taken a proactive approach to this topic by publishing these guidebooks. We all agree that taking the first step is never easy, especially when there are only a few known cases to reference here in Korea – yet. So, thank you for taking the initiative. So, our first question is, were there any challenges you faced when initiating this accessibility and diversity project at Smilegate? What’s your thought on this? Lee: About six months after I joined Smilegate, I attended the GDC (Game Developers Conference) in the US for the first time. Seeing tens of thousands of developers gather to discuss a wide range of topics—many of which weren’t directly tied to the profitability of the games—was eye-opening for me. What caught my eye was that those topics were not isolated within specialized teams within each company. Instead, they were discussing these topics with various stakeholders between the team and companies. It was astonishing to see that game developers were organically sharing various insights and know-how on making games better for the future. The issue of game accessibility, in particular, stood out to me the most. Considering that video games continue to grow as a mainstream entertainment medium, I wondered, ‘Are we truly considering players from diverse backgrounds when designing our games? Are we listening to their needs?’ And the reality was that we had a long way to go. One of the biggest hurdles pointed out at the GDC that year was accessibility for players with disabilities, presented by actual people with physical challenges. It was also insightful to see that some game companies actively hire people with physical challenges while developing a game or establish community channels to gather feedback directly from those people to achieve better game accessibility. So, that visit to the US was a pivotal experience for me. Upon coming back to Korea, we realized that this was something that we needed to do here at Smilegate. So, after a series of discussions, we decided to hire game developers with disabilities – as we thought that would be the most effective way to tackle the issue of our game accessibility. Editor: Right. So, if I understood correctly, your team hired several game testers to work on accessibility together? Can you tell us more about how it went? Was it easy to find candidates? Lee: Hiring was not the biggest issue. For example, one of our current game accessibility testers is an active game player born with a hearing impairment. They told us that until the age of six, they were unable to speak. Thankfully, after getting a hearing aid, their language skills developed rapidly. For this person, video games were both a friend and a way of life. Opportunities for people with disabilities were relatively sparse. If we do a rough estimation, say roughly 5% of the population has some form of disability, then it would make sense to have that amount of job opportunities in game-related fields for those individuals. The reality is, apparently not. So, we thought there would be enough people to join our initiative and start posting job listings looking specifically for game accessibility testers. We also worked closely with the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled (KEAD) to explain our intentions and goals. KEAD also saw great potential in this because most jobs often offered to people with disabilities in Korea are primarily concentrated in the service sector, like nail polish art or car washing jobs, but have little to do with the creative industry. So KEAD was like, ‘This is a new thing for us,’ and provided significant support in the recruitment, which resulted in a surge in applicants. During interviews, I realized something profound: many people love games and want to turn that passion into a career, yet they have never been given the opportunity to do so. One of our testers, who I mentioned earlier, the one with hearing impairment, later told me, ‘If not for this job, I would never have imagined myself being able to engage deeply and think about games that I love in this professional manner’. Editor: When implementing game accessibility and diversity initiatives, companies often view business objectives as their natural pursuit of profitability while perceiving ethical responsibilities as something they ‘have to’ do because of rules. This could be a bit of a sensitive question, but if we were to categorize Smilegate’s motivations into game accessibility and diversity, which one would hold greater weight? Business or ethical considerations? Lee: That’s a great question. Initially, I approached this initiative purely from social and ethical responsibility, believing it aligned well with Smilegate’s corporate values. However, as more testers came in, we received incredibly detailed feedback about the games we were developing. Since they were passionate gamers, they analyzed the games meticulously and reported their experiences to the developers. I can confidently say that their input significantly improved our games’ quality. We also acknowledge that people play games in many different ways—some use one hand, some use their feet, and others rely entirely on their eyes. Meeting and talking with these players who use ‘diverse’ ways to play games helped us pinpoint the issue more in-depth and iterate our game designs. While game accessibility may be seen as an initiative to improve the game for the ‘few,’ what it does is that it benefits the ‘many.’ That’s why we now consider improving accessibility means improving our overall game quality, which in turn attracts more players. Editor: Would you say Smilegates’ accessibility-related tasks primarily focus on testing but not so much on the actual game development process? Lee: That is correct. Our current primary focus is identifying issues within games. We try constantly testing our various game titles, pinpoint problematic areas from an accessibility standpoint, and report them to the development team. Since our testers play many games across genres, they provide us with how different each game is, good or bad, in terms of accessibility. For instance, one game might include colorblind-friendly features, while another in the same genre might completely lack such a thing. Such insights allow us to provide constructive feedback to developers, with actual references for them to benchmark on. For players with hearing impairments, visualizing audio cues in games is quite crucial. If all in-game sounds can be represented as visual indicators, the barriers to their playing games will be significantly improved. So we try to provide as many references to our game developers, on how to iterate UX/UI design solutions that can effectively translate audio into visual elements. Which serves as a good guide for our developers to iterate their designs. Editor: Solutions like that seem like not just an isolated issue for players with disabilities. For instance, such visualized audio cues would also be helpful for those playing games in the metro or other public spaces without audio devices. I also often say, “Low-floor buses are not just for those with wheelchairs; in fact, they also help my mom and her knees.” In the same way, accessibility doesn’t just help usability for minorities; it enhances usability for everyone. So, in your case, having testers with firsthand experience with game accessibility challenges has been crucial in identifying where and what to improve Smilegate’s games. Then, have you noticed any changes within the development teams due to their feedback? Lee: Frankly speaking, that was one of my biggest concerns at the beginning of this initiative. Game development teams are often under tight deadlines and limited resources, so game accessibility issues might not always be a priority compared to, let’s say, fixing critical bugs in the game. So, it wasn't easy to bring up the topic at first. But thankfully, over time, I sense that our game development teams’ overall awareness of game accessibility has significantly improved. For example, one of our Smilegate teams working on new game projects has proactively approached us, saying, ‘Since we’re targeting a global audience, we want to make sure our game meets accessibility standards. Could you test our game?’ I think there’s certainly a market demand here. I was in discussion with some game projects at Smilegate that aim for a global launch. And we hear things like, ‘We had to make several revisions because our game lacked game accessibility issues’. This shift in mindset shows that the industry is starting to recognize the need for accessibility. Editor: How long did it take for your development teams to recognize these needs for accessibility efforts? Lee: We hired accessibility testers in January and then held our first game accessibility review open session in June. Many game developers attended, and one lead developer told me that despite working in games for over a decade, they had never considered accessibility in this way. They also said that they have felt deeply about the need for game accessibility and will consider it when making games. I’d say it took us about a year and a half until we started receiving proactive requests from teams to review game accessibility in their projects. That was also the amount of time we needed to raise awareness of the issue to take root; if we do not consider game accessibility now, the game will end up in trouble. One and a half years was the time that we needed to reach the point where, in development team meetings, it became natural to have someone asking, ‘Is this okay from an accessibility standpoint?’ or where a project lead would say, ‘let’s make sure to consider accessibility as well’ to their team. Editor: Okay, so one and a half years, until you noticed changes. Was it shorter or longer than you anticipated? I’m asking because I also hope to interview other game companies in Korea and their relevant departments on what we can learn from this experience. So, it would be nice to provide some hope to teams out there who are working on similar issues that you’ve faced. Lee: I think things improved quicker than I thought. Perhaps it’s because quite a few people at Smilegate were already interested in game accessibility, which helped us spread the idea faster. Editor: We’re also interested in hearing about the game accessibility in gameplay devices, aka, hardware. You’ve recently showcased a gameplay device accessibility exhibition as well. But Smilegate isn’t particularly a hardware company; it’s a company that develops and publishes games. So, are there any challenges you face regarding game accessibility due to limitations coming from gameplay hardware rather than software? From your game accessibility department’s perspective, are there any unsolvable challenges you might have that come from the physical limitations of the gameplay devices? Something that is beyond game software developers’ control? Lee: So far, we have only tackled areas that we can control and haven’t caught up with such hardware issues. There are vendors that provide various assistive devices for living and gaming. We worked closely with the Gyeonggi Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Assistant Center (GGATRAC), which allowed us to showcase various assistive equipment at the exhibition. However, we still need to talk with players using those types of equipment in daily life to pinpoint what we can do to iterate our games. That’s why we expect a one-day panel session with these individuals to hear their needs and discuss what we could do. Unfortunately, we are having difficulty finding enough participants for this session. Editor: Even if a game company is committed to improving their games’ accessibility, there are still limits to the limited hardware infrastructure. So, in that sense, perhaps your work goes beyond just enhancing Smilegate’s internal game development process. It seems more about fostering a dialogue and external collaboration. Lee: Absolutely. Expanding accessibility requires a broader foundational work. That’s why we’ve been discussing a project with GGATRAC to install some gameplay devices for people with disabilities. The center has around 1,000 members and is equipped with about 165 square meters of available space. So perhaps we could use profits from our two books to set up some computers and assistive devices there, transforming the space into a place where people with disability could play games freely at any time. And call it a ‘Game Play Lab’ or ‘Game Living Room’—something like that. Editor: Funny that you mentioned the profit from the books. Making profits by selling books is not always easy these days. I guess the books have sold decently well? Lee: True. It’s not easy. But honestly, we never aimed to profit from these book projects, so we didn’t have high expectations. We mainly released these books because, when pioneering something new, we have to develop a cohesive language (vocabulary) for it, too. Without a clear terminological framework, it’s challenging to articulate ideas and concepts or define them in a way that would resonate with many people. By putting these ideas into words, we hoped to spread awareness and help people understand the value of accessibility. In many ways, this book is our first step. It is about establishing language and providing a foundation for future works before it’s too late. Our next goal is to refine these concepts further to continue evolving our work. Perhaps we can publish more books in the future. Editor: Oh, so would there be follow-ups? If so, what are the plans for the next publications? Lee: Yes. If you take a look closely at our books “Concepts and Cases of Game Accessibility” and “Concepts and Cases of Content Diversity,” you’ll notice that they are labeled as books number 1 and 2. We don’t have concrete plans for a third or fourth book just yet, as we’re still in work progress. Our current aim is to document more of our internal case studies and investigate more case examples in future volumes. In fact, the third chapter of “Concepts and Cases of Game Accessibility,” already includes some of our real-case examples. We want to continue recording and sharing our journey onwards. In addition to book publishing, we also have some educational videos titled "An Alternative Perspective on Diverse Players: Inclusive Game Design (다양한 플레이어를 바라보는 또 하나의 방식, 포용적 게임 디자인)", which is specifically designed as an educational video for game developers. Right now, we are in the process of distributing the video internally within our company—to game developers here in Smilegate. But of course, our long-term goal is to expand its reach to universities and industry organizations, exposing them to future game developers. We plan to collaborate with institutions that recognize the importance of this topic, providing the content for free and integrating it into their pedagogical coursework. Editor: This might be a bit sensitive question, but do you feel that our industry and education have the necessary expertise to effectively educate people on diversity and inclusion? Lee: Surely diversity and inclusion haven’t been part of the mainstream agenda of our conventional paradigm in Korean society. That’s why we are exploring potential partnerships with universities and academic organizations in Korea that align with our vision to incorporate the topic of diversity and inclusion. The aim here is to tackle the issue in a more structured way, such as curricula and practical pedagogical implications for future game devs. For example, we could organize an academic conference with both domestic and international speakers while also discussing with these experts the “Concepts and Cases of Game Accessibility” book. When we first started this work, we collaborated with experts from the AbleGamers Foundation, a US-based nonprofit organization focused on game accessibility, and professionals specializing in inclusive game design worldwide. We envision one day inviting these experts here and hosting a forum where we could foster industry and education-wide conversations. We look forward to joint collaboration with academia and industry experts in the future. Editor: The issue of game accessibility is not the one-game-company problem, and Smilegate cannot tackle this alone. We were particularly struck by, during the recent accessibility exhibition, how many representatives from different companies were present, indicating a growing industry-wide interest in this topic. What’s your thought on this? Lee: There are outside cases like the Fair Play Alliance. It’s the place where game companies and players meet and collaborate to make gaming more inclusive. I think these kinds of cross-industry conversations help not only improve accessibility but also grow the game market itself. I believe Korea would greatly benefit from similar open discussions and exchanges of ideas among game developers. Editor: IT sectors tend to establish industry standards through international dialog, where companies and academia work together to discuss certain new terminologies and technologies. And eventually, establish universal standardized protocols across the industry. I see that we perhaps also need such cross-regional cross-sectional collaboration for games. Some countries already do have some game accessibility guidelines, but they aren’t always shared or discussed outside their comfort zone. What’s your thought on this? Why does game accessibility still struggle to achieve broad dialog? Lee: I’ve been contemplating this issue, too. For instance, North America has proactively driven game accessibility initiatives, but those initiatives’ connection to Asia remains weak. This is a bit surprising for me, given how rapidly the Asian gaming industry has grown in the past years. However, I also sense that we’re living in a moment of change. I see that things are different now. Within our company, I’ve noticed a shift in the atmosphere. More game developers are expressing interest in game accessibility. For instance, I’ve met a front-end developer who has reached out to us, saying they resonate with these values and want to learn more. Seeing this kind of naturally emerging engagement motivates us to keep pushing forward. Even if it starts with just a handful of individuals, sustaining this momentum is key to long-term progress. Editor: It’s remarkable to see how your company has made significant strides in promoting game accessibility. And we’re starting to see some tangible results. But what about the public sector? You seem to be actively collaborating with public organizations—do you think greater government involvement and support could accelerate progress? Lee: Last month, there was a conference discussing tax benefits for game companies investing in game accessibility. Unlike other media, games rely heavily on complex technology, making accessibility solutions particularly challenging to implement without the private sector’s effort. There’s certainly a growing discourse about the need for game accessibility, and that is also true even in the public sector. So, I believe things will move faster from now on, as both public and private sectors are on board. What stood out to me was their shift in focus—not just recognizing the importance of accessibility but actively considering how to encourage companies to take action rather than the government trying to approach this top-down. Editor: Perhaps we will see more game companies that have dedicated accessibility and diversity teams in the future. Some may take individual initiatives, but do you think there’s value in forming an industry-wide coalition in Korea for game accessibility initiatives? Like an overarching organization to drive progress beyond each company and its teams working individually that could perhaps help foster further external collaboration. Lee: Surely, it would be nice to have a diverse group of people contributing to this effort in their ways. But then, I firmly believe that game developers must be at the center of these efforts. They are the creators. They are the ones developing games that directly reach their consumers (players), so their engagement will be crucial to making meaningful changes. In Silicon Valley, developers take the initiative to identify challenges, collaborate with experts from various backgrounds, and drive innovation. If developers who are passionate about accessibility come together, discuss these issues, and work toward solutions, we can avoid stagnation and create real impact. That’s why we’ve been building an internal accessibility community—bringing game developers together, at least within our company, to nurture knowledge-sharing and problem-solving and gradually expand our efforts. Editor: The ideal situation would be to have people with actual experience, with needs for game accessibility and inclusive design, to work on game development. But the reality is that you would need education and training to develop games, and accessible game education barely exists in Korea. One could be willing to learn about game development, but with a physical disability, entering a game career itself can be challenging. Lee: Absolutely. We also want to see more and more game developers with various backgrounds, including those with disabilities, join the industry. That’s why I think, despite the fact that we are currently hiring accessibility testers, their career journey shouldn’t stop there. Instead, we need to create pathways for them to become game designers, programmers, etc. And supporting them if necessary. In the end, establishing a culture where everyone, regardless of disability, has the opportunity to develop their game development skills will benefit the entire industry. When people from different backgrounds collaborate, they bring new perspectives that spark innovation. Our role is to help create those intersections—where diversity leads to fresh ideas and meaningful progress. Editor: I fully agree. That’s also the reason why I keep coming back to the idea that we need something beyond individual companies tackling accessibility on their own. Because game development education—especially in areas like accessible game design—shouldn’t fall solely on one company’s shoulders. It makes me wonder if there would be any external organization that could take the lead on this. For example, game education institutions could introduce designated intake quotas for people with disabilities or create development environments designed with game accessibility and hire people who are fit for such workspace. But as far as I know, we’re not quite there yet. That’s why I feel that we need to scale up these efforts, such as a designated organization or consortium. What’s your thought on that? Lee: That could certainly play a role in laying the groundwork. Our current goal is to open up a conversation. If someone says, ‘Accessibility is not my major focus in game development’ but later says, ‘Thanks to your effort, now I know why and how it is needed’ – then we did our job. That’s what we’re aiming for. What we’re striving for now is to create more moments where people realize, ‘Yeah, game accessibility is something I can contribute to.’ That way, I believe more and more people would be actively discussing game accessibility as one of the main agenda items in the design meetings. Also, I think that Korea, in particular, could adopt accessibility measures at a much faster pace. Because the game industry here tends to be quick to catch up with global trends, and Korean game companies’ technical capabilities are in a strong position – they can implement solutions effectively. So, I believe that once we gain momentum, we can excel in this area. Editor: Watching you and your team’s efforts as it unfolds has been inspiring. But I can’t help but think about how challenging this must be for you. One of the toughest aspects, I imagine, is addressing not just game accessibility but also the issue of diversity. The two issues overlap but are not quite precisely the same. How would you describe the current attitude toward diversity in Korea’s game industry? (Translator’s note: The issue of “diversity,” more specifically the topic of gender diversity and equality, is a highly debated topic in the South Korean game scene since post-#gamergate.) Lee: Yes, accessibility and diversity are not identical concepts. One key distinction is that diversity is interpreted in a much broader range of ways, often shaped by personal experiences, and thus, how someone perceives diversity is largely influenced by their experiences. It’s a delicate subject, but we’ve seen cases where some games received negative reception because they pushed certain ideological messages too forcefully without a strong foundation in gameplay. At the core, I believe a game must be fun to play. We’ve seen games that fail because their fundamental foundation for fun gameplay is weak but instead leans too heavily on a social message that does not correspond to its core design. Although diversity and a game’s success can be linked, they are not directly causal with each other. Because if you cannot separate “fun” from game design, it would break the fundamental equation of games. Of course, another aspect here is that we must not isolate the “fun”-ness of the game targeting one specific target audience, the so-called ‘core gamers.’ Instead, we need to acknowledge the wide variety of gamer profiles and their broad range of games out there in the world. When addressing diversity, regardless of global collaboration or direct engagement with stakeholders, the crucial thing here is to bring in people with disabilities and experts who know about accessibilities to join. Having those direct stakeholders to get involved. Without that, efforts can backfire. Editor: We GG sometimes receive articles from Canadian researchers. And I asked them what comes to mind when they think of Smilegate. Many have answered “K-games,” which makes me wonder…beyond accessibility, how much of your work on diversity intersects with localization? Have you encountered practical challenges in this area? Lee: Well, of course, developing a game with a single build for global distribution has its advantages in terms of business efficiency. However, we have to acknowledge that certain elements may be universally accepted, while some cannot. Awareness of cultural nuances that specific regions may find problematic is vital in global game service. We also tried to emphasize such cultural aspects of it in our book. I consider localization shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought. Recognizing and addressing elements that could be sensitive or provocative to people in different parts of the earth is essential to game service. However, localization isn’t just about avoiding pitfalls; it is something that can also be used as a powerful marketing tool. For example, we’ve seen success in Indonesia when games incorporate elements that resonate with local audiences. Companies that have access to diverse groups of people and a channel to discuss such cultural aspects have the advantage of it. Game companies with a global presence, like subsidiary offices around the earth, have an advantage here. If a game features a Japanese character, their Japanese office can provide insights on attracting their game to the local audience. And the same applies to Korean players. Therefore, companies that primarily operate with homogenous groups of talents and domestically isolated pipelines would face more challenges in maintaining a global approach to diversity and localization. Without direct access to diverse perspectives, there’s a higher risk of missing core elements that could either alienate or engage different audiences. Editor: This might be a more challenging topic. Regional cultural diversity is a relatively less sensitive topic to discuss in games compared to, let’s say, gender diversity in games. We still consider gender issues, and gender representation in games is something that we should pay attention to. So, in terms of gender diversity, what is Smilegate’s approach? Lee: No one (in Smilegate) has brought up that issue (about gender diversity) with us face-to-face until this moment. But few people brought it up online, and we have seen fearsome debates and conflicts emerge on social media and web forums. (Translator’s note: The issue of gender diversity and equality has been a highly debated topic in the South Korean game scene since post-# #gamergate .) Over time, I’ve come to realize that whenever we talk about diversity, whether in discourse or terminology, there are always supporters but also people who strongly reject it. Witnessing this wide range of spectrum of reactions coming from both in and out of our company has been a valuable learning experience for me, particularly in understanding how to navigate and balance this discourse. Editor: So, it sounds like you’re saying that reactions tend to exist on both ends of the spectrum? And you’ve witnessed reactions from both sides? Lee: Exactly. But I’ve realized that even people with vastly different perspectives, even those with extreme points of view, can all engage in conversations to learn more about each other. The problem is that, in many cases, people dislike something without fully articulating why they don’t like each other’s thoughts. So, I’ve taken the approach of simply asking: What exactly don’t you like? What would be acceptable to you? And surprisingly, it worked. It’s certainly not easy, but I’ve come to see that the effort to balance the dialog is incredibly difficult but also absolutely necessary. Editor: It is certainly not easy. Communication is arguably one of the most complicated aspects of mankind. And even when you put in the effort, you don’t always see immediate results. What do you think of that? Lee: That’s true. To be honest, I was intimidated to talk with gamers whose views were very different from mine. But instead of avoiding those conversations, I tried to meet with them and talk to them if possible. And some of the discussions turned out to be incredibly insightful. I realized that these conversations and efforts to find a common ground are essential for conflict management. From there, I also try to navigate the discussions with tangible example cases or topics. Like, rather than debating abstract concepts, I prefer to create something – whether it’s a book, a game, or another concrete project. And use that as a basis of conversation. I came from a non-game development background and worked in different sectors before joining the game industry. I’ve also learned to be extra careful and always ask more questions before assuming anything. Editor: I feel even more strongly that more game companies should be engaging in these conversations. As someone who personally identifies as a gamer, I’ve always been frustrated by the way gamers are often stereotyped in one particular profile. Ironically, even gamers themselves are trapped in this idea that they are supposed to resist diversity to secure their ground. But when it comes to the topic of diversity in games, it also extends to the issue of diversity of gamers. Lee: You just pointed out one of the essential things that I think about when it comes to diversity in games; the diversity of gamers. Anyone can be a gamer. This person can be a gamer, that person can also be a gamer, and even people who haven’t yet played a game can become gamers. We need to broaden our view and definition of gamers. I believe that is the way to elevate the societal view towards gaming in Korean society in a more positive direction and recognize a mainstream cultural activity – instead of being neglected as a nerdy activity for a deserted few. We are getting there. Everland (Translator’s note: one of Korea’s largest amusement parks) recently hosted a Game Culture Festival featuring popular game IPs, targeting family visitors. That tells us that gaming has become a widespread, accessible form of entertainment. If that’s the case, then we need to move beyond outdated stereotypes about games and gamers about who qualifies as a real gamer. Shifting that mindset isn’t just about inclusivity. It’s also an important mindset for game production and business standpoints as well. Editor: Games have the potential to achieve the aspect of diversity that no other conventional media can do. For example, games could do something that films cannot do. But the key part of game design is making players see diversity as inherently fun – and align with the core gameplay. Making the topic of diversity attractive and fun to play is a matter of game design. It’s a game design challenge, which is why I don’t see diversity as a sole issue of game ethics. Lee: I agree. If we frame diversity purely as a moral obligation, it can feel forced. What I’d really love to see is gamers engaged in thoughtful discussions about why diversity matters instead of blunt negative reactions like ‘Oh! I hate this political correctness…’ blah blah blah. (Laugh). Look at “Baldur’s Gate 3”. The level of freedom in gameplay there is extraordinary. The game allows players to freely customize their experience, adjusting everything from the visibility of sensitive content to detailed character appearance options. The game offered gameplay for diverse people to enjoy the game in the most diverse way possible, and in turn, received an overwhelmingly positive response. Perhaps that’s the direction we should be leaning toward when it comes to diversity in games. Just like players have different game preferences, they also have unique aesthetic and narrative tastes. By embracing that diversity in game design, companies can turn diversity into a strategic asset, not just a social responsibility. Tags: Diversity, DEI, D&I, smilegate
1) Weird (2020.12.09),Toxicity in Gaming Is Dangerous.

Retrogaming in Finland Finland has a long and established history of computer game development, starting from the late 1970s and commercializing in the 1980s. The first esports tournament – which was not called “esport” at the time but “Finnish Computer Game Championships” – was held already in 1983, and gaming quickly evolved into one of the key leisure activities of adolescents by the early 1990s. The Commodore 64 played a significant role in this development, as its popularity in the 1980s and still in the 1990s became synonymous with the Finnish gaming generation as a gateway to other types of digital play and programming. Just as the Asian financial crisis hit Korea in 1997, Finland suffered a deep financial depression between 1990 and 1993, which was soon followed by further interest and investing in computers and high-class (home) technology, especially with the rise of Nokia mobile phones. Unlike in many other countries, home computers became standard household products across the population and people still play mostly at home with their own PCs – perhaps due to the scarce density of the population (Finland has only 5M people but is geographically more than three times larger than Korea). This cultural context has marked the Finnish retrogaming scene with local characteristics, which can be divided into three distinct domains. First, due to the long history of Finnish game making and PC driven play, a relatively large number of the local hobbyists are curious about game history and many people have personal game and computer collections. The geographic nature of Finland supports relatively spacious architecture, thus allowing people to store legacy technologies. This archiving, collecting, and sharing (physical and digital) gaming memories is one of the key aspects of Finnish retrogaming. Second, despite the PC having had a major impact on the history of Finnish computer game development and play, many adolescents of the 1990s and early 2000s had game consoles in their childhood years before moving to use PCs (PC interfaces were never translated to Finnish due to the small population so using one required fluent in English). Almost all international consoles have been released in Finland since the late 1980s and today many adults like to revisit their childhood by retrogaming with the consoles that formed a part of their childhood. Third, due to the increasing boom of home computers (and consoles) in the early 2000s with the Nokia mobile technology boom, the Finnish arcade gaming culture vanished almost entirely. Until the late 1990s, gaming arcades were still a common particle of Finnish cities and entertainment culture, but as people moved to invest (even) more on their home gaming infrastructures, the interest toward arcade games dropped and the business became unprofitable. Today, many people visit arcades as retro game spaces to relive former arcade experiences. Reflecting upon this historical background, retrogaming in Finland ranges from specific consoles to various personal computers across different decades. There are different active retrogaming groups, entrepreneurs and even museums set around retrogaming and hardware. It is not uncommon to stumble upon a news feature about retro gamers or various social media groups embracing or seeking to profit from retro games. Below, we elaborate on this history via three parties from whom we asked one simple question: What is the most distinct feature of Finnish retrogaming? Our first response comes from PhD Niklas Nylund who works for the Finnish Game Museum in the city of Tampere. The Finnish Game Museum is a collaboration between the city of Tampere, Media Museum Rupriikki, game collective Pelikonepeijoonit and the University of Tampere set to represent Finnish gaming culture and how it has developed over the years. The Museum was opened in 2017 and was crowdfunded by Finnish gaming enthusiasts who donated 100,000€ to establish a public archive of game history. It is a meeting place for the past and the present, offering low-threshold participation in gaming culture for both locals and visitors. According to Nylund, the most distinct feature of Finnish retrogaming is its openness, collaboration, and respect for other people in democratic decision making. Finland is a small country, and its conversation culture is open to an extent that high cultural heritage institutions were from the start interested in having a dialogue with retro gamers and learning from them (and vice versa). Nylund adds that experiences have been positive with parties interested in preserving games through projects such as the Finnish game museum and having a shared “round table of game preserving.” Our second response is credited to Eero Pihkala, the president of Academic Nintendo Club (ANC) in Turku University. ANC is a hobby group offering free-time retrogaming activities around old and new games ranging from the 1980s consoles to retro esports. These kinds of clubs, academic and non-academic, are common in Finland and differ in format as well as specialization from specific consoles and computers to genre-based groups. According to Pihkala, representing ANC, “the most distinct feature of Finnish retrogaming is appreciating games equally from all different generations. That’s how we can preserve the history of gaming culture(s) and celebrate the legacy of diversity in it as opposed to chasing the latest trends in the AAA-market.” They also add that retrogaming is a “fluid concept,” but for the Finns the MS-DOS and PC-based gaming activities form its core. Finally, we talked to Markus Autio who is the owner of Sugoi, an arcade hall in Helsinki known for its collection of (primarily Japanese) arcade games from the 1990s to this day. In Autio’s view, “Finnish retrogaming is about nostalgia. People love to revisit games that they knew as kids or teens. And it doesn't even have to be a game they remember playing, but maybe something they just saw in some darkened corner of a mall, having left a lasting impression. Or maybe they read about it in a videogame magazine at the time. The key of this retrogaming is to be familiar with the game in one way or another, which sparks nostalgic interest.” Along these lines, nostalgic arcades are currently making a small comeback to the Finnish cityscapes and provide a space for (often social) retro game sessions for more and less active hobbyists. In addition to the above three domains of retrogaming, one more unique feature can be noted as an endnote. From the 1980s to late 1990s, a wave of DIY-games for the PCs (usually MS-DOS) emerged in Finland, often representing satiric and parodic themes with dark humor. These games were primarily nonprofit, and the designers were standardly left anonymous. Their shareware distribution occurred via traded disks and early bulletin board systems, ultimately forming a small piece of Finnish gaming history that retro gamers summon by playing them in live-streams and creating online videos of them. Many of these games include content that is intentionally provocative or hostile; however, instead of refusing to acknowledge their existence, informed retrogaming activities can help understanding their historical context of emergence and to shed further light on their influences on later cultural developments.
Some claim that this Belgium-made game has made a new mark in the RPG genre, listing it as one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of 2023 alongside The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo, 2023). However, this article is not going to address the games themselves but rather the economic discourse of the gaming industry surrounding the production of these titles. First, the high-budget AAA games industry that sustains itself through the 'conventional (form of) capital'. Second, the contrasting mid- to low-budget games based on 'crowdfunding economics' (e.g., Kickstarter and Early Access). Looking at various gaming communities on the internet, it appears that many Korean gamers are actively comparing with other AAA games, including , while labeling them as if they were developed in a similar game production process. To be more specific, while gamers praise for its creativity and rich details, they also, in contrast, criticize and other AAA games for lacking something despite being developed in a similar environment. The criticism is about the negligence of craftsmanship of AAA game developers – such as those in – for not being able to deliver richly crafted games despite having a similar amount of resources. One could argue that such criticism is coming from gamers' expectations for good quality games and the failure of anticipation that the game they've highly expected 'could have been better'. And I'm not completely against that argument. Instead, what I would argue is the binary labeling and comparing of these two game titles that is far from reality. Aside from the fact that both and belong to the similar game genre and received wide public attention upon their release, the two games only have marginal similarities when it comes to how they were developed. Their game design elements are also vastly different, and you cannot just do a direct 1:1 comparison with each other. While is a mass-produced product built with an efficient and stable production direction backed by large investment capitals, is closer to a craft product targeting a much niche target audience grounded from crowd-sourced funding. Of course, I'm not here to discuss the superiority or inferiority between manufactured mass-products and crafted products. What is a more important factor here to discuss is the possible impact that crowdfunding economy, backed by a niche target audience, has on the games that we get to play. can be regarded as a typical AAA game with a strong tendency to create a massive product with concentrated large-scale capital investment. In a number of interviews, Todd Howard, the director of Bethesda Game Studio, highlighted as their well-established studio’s first new IP in 25 years. The studio's mass-scale promotions worldwide, including game trailers and demo showcases in various game shows, clearly demonstrated the massive scale of Microsoft’s capital resources. It also showed what product value has to Bethesda Game Studio, Zenimax Media, and Microsoft, which clearly would have excited the investors on Wall Street. At the same time, the developer was extremely cautious about disclosing its information throughout the production process. We can speculate this from Todd Howard's interview at the Develop: Brighton conference 2020, in which he mentioned that the team "(would) like to do it as much as possible when we can really be able to show it – to show what the final product looks like and feels like, closer to the release" instead of stringing the gamers' "fatigue of wanting something." To put this another way, this demonstrates 's closed production environment with lesser public feedback. And this is not just 's story: as we may all know, the majority of AAA games do not disclose their development process to the public, and the process of receiving feedback is limited to internal QA or public trials and demos, keeping its exclusiveness and prestigiousness from its fans. This further engages the gamers closer to the game’s release date, amplifying their curiosity and expectations of the game – to the point they will gladly open up their wallet and purchase the game. On the other hand, such AAA game’s one-sided strategy also imposes its own risk; to gamers’ misled expectations to disappointment. Gamers’ critical comments towards followed by the game’s release indicate that Bethesda’s internal predictions (perhaps their developers, or executives and shareholders) did not align with their target audiences’ expectations. The game just did not meet people’s expectations towards a well-made game combining space exploration filled with rich and detailed in-game interactive elements – on how they expect Bethesda Game Studio's own unique and long-established RPG design style. Instead, Bethesda appears to have taken more of a simplistic approach with fewer rich and detailed in-game elements as a payback for going big. Perhaps creating a fully immersive virtual space world was impossible in their AAA game production system. We can see this from one of the game’s primary and yet controversial features of space exploration, where the developers have made a vast scale of fully functioning virtual space but with procedural generation of planetary terrain and simplification of spaceship take-off and landing processes, which resulted in limiting the player’s ability to actually explore and do things in the in-game world. Unfortunately, what could have been a valid strategy from the company’s standpoint was not the game design direction that Bethesda’s long-time fans have hoped for. This gap between expectations versus the delivered product, amplified by the company’s recent business strategy, backfired into gamer’s satire and ridiculed remarks towards the game and its developers. is not Bethesda Game Studio's first and only failure. The company has once received strong criticism when they initially released (Bethesda Game Studios, 2018) without being able to deliver its promised immersive open-world game experience. It had underperforming online gaming systems that failed to synergize with the existing Bethesda Game Studio’s unique RPG style, which was clearly a mismanagement of its business strategy. Sure, has better quality than as the studio was able to spend more time in production, which allowed developers to put a significant amount of effort into launching the game. But nevertheless, the case of exposes how a one-sided and efficiency-hungry AAA game production pipeline can further solidify the gap between gamers’ (and the market’s) expectations. It also shows the fundamental downside of this rigid pipeline game production model. Perhaps now is the time, upon learning from , when Bethesda Game Studio should consider a fundamental shift in its pipeline. < Baldur’s Gate 3 > , on the other hand, is a game that was developed simultaneously as the developers share the development process. The game was available for early access for three years until the game’s official release and frequently disclosed its production process to Baldur’s Gate series fans. Such strategy resembles the lively production cycle of crowdfunding economics, despite the game was not directly funded by crowdfunding channels (e.g., Kickstarter). (Because Larian Studio has never adopted the crowdfunding method to finance their games since their successful (Larian Studios, 2014).) Already in the beta testing phase, gamers were able to deliver their feedback for the game to the developers via the game’s official community on the internet. The developers also disclosed their progress upon such feedback and change through community updates, which wouldn’t have been possible without the trust of the developers in their games’ community. Larian Studio has also implemented the abundant openness and freedom of TRPG as much as possible into the game during its three years of early access. I don’t need to delve into further details of ’s high degree of freedom, as it has been widely acclaimed in numerous game reviews and demo play videos on the internet. What is important to mention here, though, is the fact that was produced in a way to accommodate as many demands coming from its fans. I consider this consensus-building with the fans to be what eventually leads the game to an overwhelmingly positive response upon its release. This is obviously not an easy direction for the company, which makes the development story of so much more interesting. While the game design that guarantees maximum openness and freedom to gamers does sound appealing to players, it also adds complexity to the game for those who create it. Also accommodating every demand could just end up making the game that is too complex for people to even play. Being a top-down RPG (with the possibility for gamers to adjust the camera angle), unlike other mainstream CRPGs like , is not also the most favorable choice from the perspective of large capital investors. also needed to provide a vast-scale world setting, story, and significantly more cut scenes than any other of Larian Studio's previous works. So we can imagine increased the level of complexity in its production that its prequels. As such, Bethesda Game Studio and Larian Studio developed their games with clearly different directives. In addition to that, they have different pathways in history of their businesses. Bethesda Game Studio, as shown in their solid pipeline process, is a company rooted in the conventional forms of game production studio systems in the 1990s. The company gradually scaled up with mergers and acquisitions backed by large-scale capital investments – like those in large-scale software sectors. During this time, in the early to mid-1990s, when Bethesda started as an RPG production studio, the online game community was immature. It didn’t have its own logic of ‘economy’ per se, with only a handful of alternative publishing channels available at the time. Such as shareware or small game retail stores. Due to the technical limitations of the internet environment at the time, the shareware phenomenon did not grow significantly, rather only regarded as a sort of pre-showcase method to share parts of the game to lure gamers to purchase the ‘full version’. At that time, only small-scale game developers, such as hobbyists, were able to receive direct feedback from their potential gamers for games in development. Such direct feedback mostly relied on an immediate network and thus clearly was not possible for mass-scale game production. Furthermore, the growth of Bethesda Game Studio was driven by its CEO, Robert Altman, who formerly worked at Zenimax Media and had expertise in company management and finances. Fast forward to today, we also cannot separate Bethesda Game Studio from the influence of large corporations, such as Microsoft, and investment firms on Wall Street. On the contrary, Larian Studio is a company established without a pre-existing business entity and therefore operates without existing company management or shareholder’s interest. As Jason Schreier, an American game journalist, mentioned in his article in Bloomberg, Larian Studios is a private company with its majority shareholder privately owned by Swen Vincke, Larian’s chief executive officer, alongside his wife. This allows Larian Studio to take its initiatives without trying to meet Wall Street’s expectations. However, Schreier also pointed out that such a company structure also comes with “full of risks”. As a matter of fact, Larian Studio struggled after the company failed to retrieve its share of profit from their moderate success of (Larian Studio, 2002), the first of the Divinity game series. The company had to run with only three individuals at some point while working on its sequel, (Larian Studio, 2004). Despite this risk in finances, Larian continued to operate in a private company structure maintaining its focus on a specific game genre, even after the success of (Larian Studio, 2014). For me, this resembles Nihon Falcom, one of the mid-size Japanese game studios that is consistently producing its own unique style of JRPGs. But of course, the main difference is that Nihon Falcom is now a public company, while Larian Studio leveraged its pivotal growth from crowdfunding economics. So what aspects of crowdfunding economics benefited the studio’s growth? Larian Studio’s supporters were comprised of people who gathered through word of mouth, fan-based, a niche group of enthusiasts. They were different from the AAA fan base, those that are often loyal to past franchises and rooting for their past glory’s comeback. In contrast, Larian Studio’s early Divinity series reached moderate success in the sense that it did not draw a solid fan base like in those massive-scale game corporations. Their recorded a positive response in the mid-2010s when various crowdfunding projects emerged all across the game development scene – with the rise of the Kickstarter platform. However, even the studio’s Kickstarter project did not draw much attention, even less spotlighted than the Kickstarter projects from the former-Interplay Entertainment veterans – the publisher of Baldur’s Gates franchise since the late 1990s. Nevertheless, made a success by satisfying the fans of classic RPGs, managing to establish the studio’s first fan base after sourcing its finances partially through crowdfunding. What is interesting here is that, unlike other successful Kickstarter game projects, including the projects from the industry-acclaimed AAA game industry veterans, the team of had not many track records to present at that time. But perhaps this allowed Larian developers to go more boldly – instead of following a safe track. Ironically to say, they didn’t have much – nothing much to lose, therefore were able to leverage greatly from this new trend of crowdfunding economics. Now, is a product developed after Larian Studio’s growth in scale since its boost from the crowdfunding economics. The game involved an estimated 200 people in development, without counting the workforce in their newly established overseas branches. Size-wise, the studio is nothing like their early days of . As journalist Schreier and the industry veteran Xavier Nelson Jr., pointed out, perhaps the production of was a lucky move in the first place – as Schreier said in his article on Bloomberg, “most other video-game developers are either part of publicly traded companies or too small to make games as ambitious as .” Established game companies like Bethesda Game Studio may be able to deploy larger manpower and greater capital investment, but wouldn’t have been able to mediate the risk of developing a game with complex rules, turn-based combat system, with countless branching paths that require countless resources on content that may go mostly unappreciated. It is even remarkable that Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of “Dungeons & Dragons”, allowed Larian Studio to go with three years of early access of as it might have risked the reputation of its brand with an unfinished game. It is also a drastic contrast with the early access of that was done primarily for just refining and supplementing a near-to-complete game. In comparison, 's early access was recklessly long and was disclosing its production process to the potential players. Of course, there were traces of some promised coming-soon contents being deleted upon the game’s release as if the early access schedule could not be extended indefinitely. But still, the trust and openness of Wizards of the Coast towards Larian Studio of letting them to continue with 3-years long early access is surely an interesting element to look into. The success of ’s open game production, rooted in crowdfunding economics, is perhaps the most intriguing phenomenon that we’ve come across in the world of games in the year 2023. Those who actively participated in the early access of were either niche, too old-fashioned, or outside the mainstream target audiences – at least, that’s how it has been seen by cool-headed market analysts in large investment capital firms. But such a niche and active fan base is not just limited to the classic RPG genre. There are numerous devoted communities in point-and-click adventures, hyper FPS, 2D platformers, dinosaur simulators, and so on. On top of that, with the growth of ESD (Electronic Software Distribution), early access, and crowdfunding since the 2000s, the world’s indie game market is more robust than ever before. This enables a scalable fandom market, which was once neglected by the logic of large capital, can now unite and establish alternative means of the games market. And this is not just an isolated case of – there are other cases like by Frontier Dev. demonstrates that fans are no longer remaining as passive consumers. It shows the impact of crowdfunding economics on the indie game scene, where niche fans' trust and devotion towards the game (i.e., towards the game that they would like to play) actually becomes powerful enough to affect the mainstream market. This contrasts with , the mass-scale production backed by large investments with a veteran production team but decided to go a safer and proven pathway towards revenue. It could be that gamers are getting fed up with the industry giant’s overemphasis on satisfying their shareholders' interest to maximize revenue and minimize risk. What backers of crowdfunding economics are doing to the game developers somewhat resembles how aristocrats during the Renaissance era used to order custom-made handicrafts from artists and craftsmen – backing the creators to make the game that fits their specific taste. While the Renaissance aristocratic patrons were a tool for monopolizing arts and crafts with their power of class and wealth, the contemporary patronage of games is more like a collective action of anonymous consumers. Here, their primary aim is to regain their access to niche crafts (of games) that were once alienated from the mainstream capital market. Of course, nothing is perfect. There’s also a downside to crowdfunding economics – that it's not always a happy ending, and the development of was perhaps a rare experiment and one-of-a-kind incident that will be remembered in the history of the game industry. It is also yet unknown whether Larian Studios will continue onward with this experiment in their future projects. Vincke has already commented in his interview with Bloomberg that he doesn't want to spend another six years working on one game and was unsure about what Larian Studios' next game is going to be. It could be that their next project may not follow the exact pathway of , and the moment may be remembered as one lucky happy moment. But nevertheless, the success of showed the world how far crowdfunding economics could go; the economics of people’s crowdfunded desire, of wanting to see the product they want to consume. For that, it was indeed the most remarkable incident in games of 2023. That’s not to say all gaming industry to follow the same path as – which is impossible – but the story certainly could inspire future innovators to come. Looking back on the early challenges that China's 8 bit gaming industry ever faced is an essential prerequisite for us to understand the industry’s current success. Therefore, this paper will analyze the Chinese 8 bit game and its history. "Walking on two Legs": The Story between Famiclones and Learning Computer In 1980, under the direction of the Ministry of Computer Industry, China began to develop arcade machines. The processing trade of these machines was carried out in Changzhou, Fuzhou, Changsha, and elsewhere, with machines sold nationwide beginning in 1983. By the end of 1981, Beijing No. 1 Institute of Light Industry(北京第一轻工业研究所)had successfully developed the first Chinese gaming console, the YQ-1. A first generation console, YQ-1 used the AY-3-8500 chip produced by General Instruments and was loaded with PONG variants. The other circuit components were made in China. In 1982, the console was released in small batches, and soon after similar consoles were assembled in factories located in Hangzhou, Wuxi, Shanghai, Inner Mongolia, Guangzhou, and other provinces. * YQ-1 console produced in China in the 1980s, AY-3-8500 chip In 1984, the second generation of gaming consoles entered the Chinese market. Until 1985, gaming consoles were typically precious and uncommon gifts given from overseas returnees to their relatives in mainland China. The situation changed in 1987 when the Famicom was introduced in China. Because the Famicom was still expensive and required an NTSC high-frequency television signal for video output (it was not an ideal match for the PAL-D television system in China), the importation of the Famicom laid the groundwork for the production of “Famiclones” in the Chinese domestic market. Initially, the Famicom was modified in Hong Kong to function with the Chinese television system. However, some manufacturers in Hong Kong and Taiwan took the opportunity to clone the console into a device directly suited for consumption in mainland China, taking advantage of the large amount of cheap labor in the southern part of the country that was created through national reform and the opening up of the country. These factories and their attendant production lines not only facilitated technology spread across the country, but also enticed mainland companies to become involved in games: In early 1987, China's southern coastal cities such as Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Ningbo took the lead in introducing the assembly of gaming consoles from Japan, and successively produced Famiclones. The brands were Lantian(兰天), Wang Zhongwang(王中王), Tianma(天马), Subar(小霸王) and so on. There were more than 700 popular video gaming software programs in China. (Pan A2) Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, China's southern coastal areas developed large-scale console production capacity, resulting in consumer price drops for consoles from 600-700 yuan in 1989 to around 100 yuan in 1992 (Sun 79). The decline in price made it possible for average wage-earning families to afford a gaming console, and as a result, playing games at home gradually became a common social phenomenon. In 1993, Tianjin Newstar Electronics Co., Ltd. (founded by the 46th Research Institute affiliated with the Ministry of Electronic Industry) raised 5 million yuan acquired the world's most advanced SUN workstation system and integrated circuit design software (as well as the SM-T production line), and successfully developed the first 16 bit television gaming console in China: the Xiaojiaoshou 16-bit stereo video gaming console. The Xiaojiaoshou was a tremendous technological achievement, making China one of the few countries in the world at the time able to independently design and produce a 16-bit console domestically. The history of the Chinese gaming console has another through line: the learning computer(学习机). When the global gaming industry blossomed in the 1980s, China resolutely embarked on a path of “individual evolution”, focusing intently on the learning computer . China pursued the learning computer mainly because the I/O element of the computer would make it possible to harness play for training purposes. According to ancient Confucian philosophy, the importance of play is relatively low. As a result, entertainment equipment (e.g., gaming consoles) often has trouble gaining traction in Chinese society. The camouflage offered by the learning computer allowed parents to imagine that their children were learning with the machine, thus reducing their anxiety about too much play. China also pursued learning computers because after the country resumed college entrance examinations at the end of the 1970s, numerous young people realized that social mobility and class reconstruction could be pursued by taking the exam. Consequently, Chinese society’s respect and confidence in knowledge increased. The phrase “knowledge upgrades your life” (知识改变命运) became a stock sentiment of the 1980s, and the learning computer was imaginatively constructed as a medium of modern knowledge. Most important of all, however, is the fact that the learning computer—and particularly its production and popularity—concealed the pursuit of national modernization within the historical impulse of China as a developing country. By sanctioning the learning computer, the state endeavored to cultivate a new socialist identity to meet the requirements of the day through fairly priced computers. Unsurprisingly, it was Deng Xiaoping who drove the historical narrative of the learning computer. One of Deng’s primary goals after returning to power was to effect a modernization of education, science, and technology. In fact, in 1977, “respecting knowledge and respecting talents” officially became the slogan of Deng-style modernization. At the Symposium on Scientific and Educational Work, Deng noted bluntly: “Our country has to catch up with the world's advanced level. Where do we start? I think it is necessary to start with science and education.” Taking this as the starting point for China’s “developing the country by relying on science and education strategy,” Deng concretized the concept in 1984 by announcing that “the popularization of computers must be picked up from the children.(计算机的普及要从娃娃抓起)” It was in this context that the whole of Chinese society was encouraged to attach great importance to computer education, and primary and secondary schools around the country began to purchase computer equipment at a rapid pace. In 1986, in order to accelerate the development of computer popularization and education, the State Science and Technology Commission, the State Education Commission, and the Ministry of Electronics Industry agreed to develop a “China Learning Computer” (中华学习机). The learning computer was even included in the national “Seventh Five-Year” scientific and technological research project and the Spark Program The combination of social and national will in full support of relevant government departments for the development and sale of learning computers resulted in the creation of substantial production capacity and a wide range of public opinion guidance. This, in turn, led to the dissemination of learning computers across China. Despite the energy behind the construction of a national learning computer, the challenge of the market economy proved enervating. The hardware and software limitations of the learning computer certainly did not help—the Apple II-based architecture paled in comparison to the Nintendo “Family BASIC” design of the learning computer’s successor, the PC learning computer (电脑学习机)—but it was the inherent contradiction between state will and market principles in the process of reform and opening-up that presented the real problem. The purpose of the learning computer was to assist with modernization, especially with young people. The game functions of learning computers, however, were not prioritized, and the focus of production and sales was incompatible with gaming functions. Nevertheless, the game function was the real market motive for Chinese families buying computers at the time. As a result, the market gradually shifted from a focus on relatively uni-functional learning computers to more multifunctional systems. This shift did not revolve around technology upgrades or an orchestrated move from state-owned to private production and sales. Rather, it was due to the transformation of market-centered power relations after the deepening of economic reform in Chinese society during the 1990s. In response to market pressure becoming the driving force of social development, self-financed learning computer manufacturers looked to meet the uncertainty and diversity of market demand. They became dedicated to converting learning computers into multimedia products, and began to focus their production designs and marketing campaigns on compatibility with gaming software. This market-oriented action contributed to a significant change in approach to learning, causing the learning computer to shed the image constructed for it by the dominant political and social forces. Gradually, the learning computer escaped the national narrative, and became, in effect, a generic gaming machine that affirmed market authority and liberated private desires. * CEC-I China Learning computer, Subor SB-486D PC learning computer “Culture Invasion” From Gaming Console to Chinese 8 Bit Gaming Software Though the domestic Chinese gaming industry was ascendant from 1980s, it was the global hegemony of SEGA, Nintendo, PC Engine, and other Japanese game hardware companies that led to real domestic commercial success through the creation of knock-off hardware systems in the 1990s. For knock-offs to be successful, they had to mimic Japanese production standards, as those standards allowed machines to take full advantage of the global gaming software assembly language. In other words, if China wanted to participate in the market competition of the gaming machine world, it had to recognize and build upon Japanese gaming architecture and logistics. For example: In 1993, the Electronic Power Industry Information Center (电力工业信息中心) and the Armed Police Science and Technology Information Center (武警 科技信息中心站) jointly developed a development system QZM that realizes the communication between PC and Famicom. This system uses 286 or 386 microcomputers as a development platform to compile application software for Nintendo. The compiled software can be transmitted to Famicom to run immediately. According to the results of the operation, the source program can be modified and debugged on the computer, and then run until it is successful. (Pan A2). This situation resulted in a development paradox: China, which had tried to solve a variety of problems related to social and economical development by reform and opening-up, was confronted with the question of development dilemma: was the country willing to accept the established world market order and become the China branch of the Japanese gaming industry, or was autonomy more important? This paradox also highlighted a long-standing problem for the Chinese gaming industry. Although Chinese companies ultimately gained market autonomy through wholesale imitation of Japanese gaming machines, they were not able to overcome the technical difficulties involved in manufacturing CPUs. The core component of the 8 bit gaming consoles—the CPU—still had to be acquired overseas. The CPU problem eventually became the primary constraint on the development of the Chinese gaming industry, forcing the industry to move from 8 bit hardware manufacturing to 8 bit gaming software and PC gaming software development at the end of the 20th century.By the way, only the production of PC gaming software is the mainstream. China's gaming software industry actually began at almost the same time as the country’s hardware manufacturing industry. In 1982, ISCAS(Institute of Semiconductors,Chinese Academy of Sciences) successfully developed a rocket launcher game chip, which was then produced by the Guilin Electronic Technical Institute That same year, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission (北京科委) organized ten universities and research institutes to collaboratively develop software for color video game consoles. Under the guidance of foreign experts, China created several television gaming programs with Chinese national characteristics in early 1983 and sold them to international gaming companies. The most successful of these games were Monkey Kings(孙悟空) and Tangram(七巧板). Monkey Kings was notable for its image storage capacity of 36K and program size of 40K, as well as for the fact that it was written in Z80 assembly language. Tangram was praised by foreign gaming machine companies because of its novel gameplay and compelling adaptation of an ancient Chinese game. Unfortunately, these and other independent gaming projects quickly fell prey to external forces. In 1988, under pressure from the national economic transformation, small and medium-sized enterprises with unclear property rights relationships (e.g., Yanshan Software[烟山软件], Pioneer Cartoons [先锋卡通]) became involved in 8 bit gaming hacking, translation, and piracy. That they did so successfully hints at the cultural crisis lurking behind the growing consumer software market: companies had to prioritize economic survival, and could only do so by replicating the imitation strategies pursued by the gaming hardware market. In other words, while the Chinese gaming software market was able to prosper, it did so by counterfeiting Japanese 8 bit games. The 1990s saw the gradual emergence of more complex game narratives, and with them a number of textual and industrial challenges for Chinese developers. The Japanese game The Legend of Kage, for example, proved surprisingly popular in China. The game told the story of a ninja hero rescuing a princess, and was infused with audiovisual symbols representing Japanese ninja culture. The problem for nationalist China was that this iconography activated colonial memories that had largely been squelched by the contemporary dominant discourse, a discourse that had no room for a vision of China as subject to a hostile foreign power. And, of course, The Legend of Kage was merely the tip of the spear of a large number of Japanese games that pierced the Chinese market. The article “The Raven, the Raven, Called: The Talk about the Mainland Electronic Game Industry” (乌鸦・乌鸦·叫——该谈大陆电子游戏业了) is instructive here, describing as it does Chinese players’ burgeoning awareness of the intersection of play and politics: Chinese players in the 1990s began openly discussing cultural colonization and games. This discussion gave rise to a new domestic computer game software market; China clearly needed its own games, with its own iconography. Players’ emerging cultural consciousness coincided with the rapid rise of China's IT industry. Much of the new homegrown IT talent was enthusiastic about the gaming industry, especially its potential for growing the computer game software sector. These IT enthusiasts realized that game-making operations are “not the lowest level of software-based operations, but a culture-based operation” (Wei 75). Although they were not prepared for the challenges associated with becoming cultural intellectuals (they had been engineers), under the double anxiety of identity and culture they began to boldly borrow the “convey moral teachings”(载道) tradition of Chinese literary and artistic works. They tried to construct a defensible national gaming culture based on political moral education and evoking a unique patriotism-based gaming spirit that pervaded the 1990s. In October 1994, Golden Disc Electronic Co., Ltd.(金盘公司)published China’s first domestic PC game, The Magic Eagle(神鹰突击队). By 1998, 15 newly established gaming companies/working groups had launched (or planned to launch) 55 PC games, a clutch that constituted the first generation of domestic PC titles. Among these game companies, it is worth noting that Fuzhou Waixing Computer Science & Technology Co.,LTD(外星科技, hereinafter referred to as Waixing). The company is well-known in the game industry, not because it released the PC game Tale of Chivalry: Anti-smoking Storm(侠义豪情传:禁烟风云) in 1997, but because it has made great contributions to the development of 8 bit gaming software in China. Since 1996, the company has produced and distributed more than 270 8-bit games, which is the core force in developing 8-bit games in China. With this company as its representative, more than ten companies aiming at making 8-bit gaming software have emerged in Chinese mainland since 1990s (see the table below). These gaming companies translated, ported, backported, hacked and distributed a large number of 8-bit gaming software without authorization, thus prospering China's 8-bit gaming market. However, this is an 8 bit game development path with Chinese characteristics. As we all know, since the release of PC Engine, the world entered the era of 16-bit games one after another in the late 1980s, and in the 1990s, it presented the situation of next-generation game wars. However, in China in 2000s, there were still gaming software companies aiming to produce obsolete 8 bit games since its establishment. Why so? This is related to China's unique history of gaming consoles. Just as China's game manufacturing industry was catching up, the "2.29" murder and corpse burning case in Luoyang shocked the whole country. Three sixth-grade pupils in Luoyang City, Henan Province, were killed by the owner of the game room and moved to the wilderness to burn their bodies. After this incident was reported by the People's Daily, CCTV and other mainstream media, it caused uproar and directly contributed to the introduction of strict game control measures. That is, on June 12, 2000, the Ministry of Culture, the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the General Administration of Customs, and the Industrial and Commercial Bureau jointly promulgated the Opinions on Developing Special Governance of Game Business Places (关于开展电子游戏经营场所专项治理的意见,hereinafter referred to as Game Console Ban), which completely stopped the "production and sales of game equipment and its components and accessories facing the domestic market", and thus the development of Chinese gaming hardware stagnated. In this context, China's gaming software manufacturing industry has also been affected. On the one hand, most gaming software production companies can only pay attention to the production of computer gaming software——and because China has begun to enter the era of online games mainly representing Korean games, these computer games are mainly online games; On the other hand, game companies that still focus on console gaming software can only develop gaming software for the existing 8 bit gaming console in the market, so China does not have the market conditions to develop the next-generation gaming software. In other words, the introduction of Game Console Ban has inhibited the development of Chinese console games, thus creating the lasting and abnormal vitality of 8 bit games in China. Perspective on 8 bit Gaming Software in China What are the 8 bit games in China? Next, we will examine the contents of these gaming texts in detail. According to the classification of production methods, these games can be divided into at least the following categories. I. Hacking Japanese gaming software. This kind of games started the history of Chinese people making 8 bit games. The representative works are Yanshan Tank and Super Contra II introduced by Yanshan Software, which are hacked from Namco's Battle City and Konami's Contra respectively. Yanshan Software was formerly a school-run enterprise of Fuzhou No.16 Middle School, so the words "Fuzhou No.16 Middle School" (福州16中)and the Chinese word "Yanshan"(烟山) appeared in Yanshan Tank (see the picture below). While which is the earliest in-game advertisement in the Chinese game industry. In a word, the trial production of 8 bit games in China started from hack Japanese games. * Yanshan Tank’s in-game advertisement II. Translating Japanese gaming software. This kind of game is mainly the unauthorized translated games released by Waixing in 1990s. According to incomplete statistics, the company has successively translated more than 30 Japanese games at that time, among which the most translated games include four Japanese popular games, namely Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy series, SD Gundam Gaiden series and Fire Emblem series. For these unauthorized translated games, we should not only criticize them from the perspective of intellectual property rights, but also understand their position in the history of Chinese games from a macro perspective. As we all know, the Chinese game market at that time was full of pirated 8 bit games. Due to the limitation of cost and technology, these pirated games generally do not translate the game instructions (many games even castrate the plots in the games), which makes it impossible for players to pass through complex games such as Dragon Quest, which are based on understanding the written information. Therefore, although JRPG games such as Dragon Quest are popular all over the world, they are not popular in China in the 20th century. The translation attempts of Waixing and other Chinese 8 bit gaming companies enable young Chinese players to enjoy the most youthful and vibrant imagination of East Asian subculture at a low price, which is of great significance for liberating young people's thoughts that are bound by mainstream political narratives. III. Backport games. This kind of game ports games from other more advanced game platforms to famiclone platform in the form of adaptation, so that Chinese players can play various popular game masterpieces on famiclone. Among them, Pokémon is the most important port object, and there are more than 50 backport works around the game, including Pokemon series of Waixing, Pocket Gem series of Nanjing Science and Technology(南晶科技,hereinafter referred to as Nanjing), Pocket Monster series of Shenzhen Jncota Technology Co., Ltd.(晶科泰,hereinafter referred to as Jncota )and Hengge Technology Co., Ltd.(恒格电子,hereinafter referred to as Hengge), Pocket Elf series of Mars Science and Technology, etc(火星科技,hereinafter referred to as Mars). It is worth mentioning that this kind of games also port classic domestic PC games. For example, Nanjing's Crescen tTear(新月剑痕) and Jncota's Xuanyuan Sword (轩辕剑)series are ported from Taiwan games. IV. The game of changing pictures(换皮游戏). Most of these games are JRPG-type games, which using metaphorical rhetoric to inject Chinese elements into the game text in the audio-visual surface of topic, story, scene, opening/game cinematics, character design, equipment accessories, image-text, and details in order to make the game emit Chinese qualities. In short, this kind of game is based on JRPG's gameplay and setting, and the original Japanese game (the main adaptation object is Dragon Quest series game) is transformed into a game that tells Chinese stories. Take Nanjing's Xuanyuan Sword series games as an example. Although the game nominally backports the classic CRPG Xuanyuan Sword of Softstar Entertainment Inc.(大宇公司) of Taiwan to famiclone, but it uses Dragon Quest's game system (including its interface, layout, system architecture, etc.) to tell Chinese stories, which reflects a colonial character inherent in the game. Therefore, almost all 8 bit RPG games produced by Chinese gamers can see the shadow of Dragon Quest series games. * Nanjing's Xuanyuan Sword V. Original game. China also has its own original 8 bit games. However, the original games here do not mean that Chinese 8-bit games have created brand-new gameplay, but that they have used existing gameplay for reference to create Chinese-themed 8-bit games. Different from the above-mentioned picture-changing games, these original games do not simply replace the visual content of the game with Chinese stories on the basis of following the holistic structure of Dragon Quest, but seek the possibility of developing 8 bit games with Chinese cultural characteristics on the basis of understanding all kinds of gameplay. In the 1990s, when China's gaming industry was underdeveloped, such an attempt was worthy of recognition. At this time, the gaming industry in Japan and the United States is in its heyday, and the whole world has fallen into the game history of "Japan-US centralism", and the game history of each country is becoming his-story far away from itself. How to create an 8 bit game that expresses its own cultural characteristics and show itself in the game field has become a proposition that China, which is at the edge of the "game empire", must deal with. In fact, there is no shortage of games telling Chinese stories in the game field. As we all know, many classic Japanese games have written Chinese history and culture. However, in a sense, such writing itself is mixed with unconscious deviation and distortion. Taking the series of Sangokushi(三国志) games produced by Japan Koei as an example, the game changed the concept of "city" of the Three Kingdoms into the concept of "Japanese Castle" of the Warring States Period in Japan in a historical way. The game seems to be based on Chinese history, but the logic of its playing has, to a certain extent, misrepresented the history of the Warring States Period in Japan. For China, this is obviously a wrong way to reproduce its own history and culture. In this sense, the original domestic 8 bit game tells the Chinese people's own culture and history from their own perspective, which has extremely high cultural value. This paper focuses on these original 8 bit games, which can be roughly divided into the following categories in terms of subject matter: 1. Games with historical themes. This kind of game mainly appeared in 1990s, and mainly narrated the modern history of China. Its representative works include Lin Zexu's Smoking Ban(林则徐禁烟), Tunnel Warfare(地道战) and so on. Most of them use role-playing gameplay, emphasizing the previous crises of "subjugation and extinction" faced by modern China in the storyline, linking the players with the fate of the country through the avatar, and telling the heroic deeds of the protagonist of the game against imperialism and colonialism. The narrative content of this kind of games is intertextual with the development of the gaming industry at that time, which constitutes a metaphor for the difficult situation of China's gaming industry at that time. 2. Biography game. This kind of game takes heroes in Chinese history or novels as the main characters, and tells the main heroic deeds of the characters, which, to a certain extent, play a role in letting Chinese players know their own heroes. His representative works include Bao Qingtian(包青天) by Waixing, Huo Yuanjia(霍元甲) and Huang Feihong(黄飞鸿) by Nanjing, Yue Fei Biography(岳飞传) by Mars, etc. Generally speaking, this kind of game is influenced by Chinese traditional literary thoughts, and mainly expresses the mainstream values such as punishing evil and promoting good, advocating chivalry and loyalty to the country. * Bao Qingtian, Huo Yuanjia, Huang Feihong, Yue Fei Biography 3. Adapted games. Adapted games are the main types of 8 bit games in China, and their adaptation ranges include classical masterpieces, martial arts novels, popular movies and TV dramas, ancient myths and folklore, and foreign fairy tales. 1) The game of adapting classical classics. This kind of game is mainly based on the ancient Chinese Four Great Classical Novels The Journey to the West(西游记), Water Margin(水浒传), Romance of the Three Kingdoms(三国演义) and Dream of Red Mansions(红楼梦), and the Ming and Qing novels Sui and Tang Dynasties(隋唐演义), Three Heroes and Five Righteousness(三侠五义), Flower and Mirror(镜花缘), etc. Its representative works include Waixing's The Journey to the West 2(西天取经2), Water Margin(水浒传), Three Heroes and Five Righteousness: Legend of the Imperial Cat(三侠五义:御猫传奇), Flower and Mirror(镜花缘), Nanjing's Dream of Red Mansions(红楼梦) and Sui and Tang Dynasties(隋唐演义). This kind of works not only extracts chapters from the original works to lay out the narrative, but also draws materials from legends, folk operas and TV dramas to enrich the plot, and integrates traditional cultural elements such as the Five Elements Principle(五行), poetry and ancient music into the game, rendering a strong Chinese atmosphere for the game text. * The Journey to the West 2, Water Margin, Three Heroes and Five Righteousness, Legend of the Imperial Cat, Dream of Red Mansions, Sui and Tang Dynasties 2) The game of adapting martial arts novels. This kind of game is mainly adapted from the martial arts novels of Jin Yong and Gu Long, two Hong Kong novelists, whose representative works include Waixing's Chu Liuxiang Legend(香帅传奇之血海飘零) and Massacre Dragon Knife(屠龙刀), Nanjing's The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils(天龙八部) and Handsome Siblings(绝代双骄), Jncota's New Biography of Chu Liuxiang(楚留香新传), etc. For the history of Chinese games, 8 bit martial arts games have special cultural significance. This is because among the fantasy and magic overseas cultural imaginations brought by a number of costume games such as Dragon Quest's, Eternal Issu, only martial arts games can be regarded as the "reserved land" of Chinese traditional literary and artistic thoughts. Under the context of the rise of Japanese and American youth subcultures, they can at least stick to the contact with traditional literature and art in form, and while striving to maintain their independence, countless Chinese players are exposed to their own popular literary and artistic thoughts which have been passed down for thousands of years. In other words, the martial arts game reflects the literary and art particularity of Chinese games, which makes Chinese traditional ideological resources such as "chivalry" and "loyalty to the liver" appear in the game field. * Chu Liuxiang Legend, Massacre Dragon Knife, The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, Handsome Siblings, New Biography of Chu Liuxiang 3) Adapting the games of film and television dramas. This kind of game followed the hot spot and was adapted from the popular film and television drama at that time. Its representative works include A Chinese Odyssey(大话西游) by Waixing, My Own Swordsman by Nanjing(武林外传), Titanic by Mars, etc. However, we can't think that these games are faithful to the original movies and TV plays. They only borrow the concept of the adapted movies and TV plays and their leading names, while the game plots are divorced from the original movies and TV plays. * A Chinese Odyssey, My Own Swordsman by Nanjing, Titanic 4) Game of adapting ancient myths and folklore. There are two kinds of games, one is a fairy tale adapted from China, and its representative works include Fighting! The Legend of Deification(封神榜格斗) by Waixing, The Legend of Nezha(哪吒传奇)by Nanjing, etc. One is the supernatural-evil game without a specific mythological archetype, and its representative works include King Defeat Devil(天王降魔传) by Waixing, and Devil way(魔道劫) by Nanjing, etc. This kind of game integrates ancient Chinese Gods-and-Ghosts legends and supernatural imagination into the game, which enriches the cultural content of 8 bit game itself, and at the same time, makes Chinese players come into contact with China's own supernatural imagination which is completely different from Japanese monster culture and European and American magic culture. * Fighting! The Legend of Deification, The Legend of Nezha, King Defeat Devil, Devil way 5) Adapting foreign fairy tales. This kind of games adapted foreign classic fairy tales into games, which played a role in letting Chinese players know foreign fairy tales to a certain extent. His masterpieces include The Wizard of Oz(绿野仙踪), The Recovery of Pinocchio(匹诺曹的复苏) by Waixing, The Lion King V(狮子王 V)by Dragon Co.,Ltd., etc. However, we can't think that these games are completely faithful to the original works. They just deconstruct the original works in the form of games and re-tell the stories in the original works in the language of games. As a matter of fact, playing 8 bit games is fundamentally different from reading classic original works. Players only pursue exciting play experiences, rather than opening up their imagination and literary sensibility. How to evaluate 8 bit games in China. What is important is, how should we understand Chinese 8 bit games? What position does it have in the history of Chinese games? It can be considered that the production and sale of domestic 8 bit games with independent intellectual property rights in the true sense began in the early 1990s, in which Waixing played a connecting role. But in fact, the domestic 8 bit game was born at an untimely time. At this time, during the critical period when China is vigorously developing computer and internet technology, a large number of computer talents who love games have poured into the gaming software manufacturing industry, which has promoted the start and rapid development of Chinese domestic (PC) games. Therefore, the mainstream of Chinese game history has rapidly changed from the history of console games to the history of computer games (including later online game). In other words, although China's 8-bit gaming software manufacturing industry is in the ascendant, due to the vigorous development of domestic PC games, 8-bit games can only "develop invisibly" in an invisible form, which has not left a strong mark in Chinese gaming history. Of course, the development of 8-bit games actually has a favorable social situation, that is, the introduction of Game Console Ban in 2000, in a sense, created conditions for the continued development of 8-bit games. The Game Console Ban " prohibits "the production and sales of gaming equipment and its components and accessories facing the domestic market", but it does not clearly indicate whether all kinds of gaming software belong to the banned ranks. This makes it impossible for China to develop 16-bit game machines and more advanced game hardware——thus entering the era of producing the next-generation console——but it can continue to develop 8-bit game software on the basis of the existing 8-bit market scale, thus making China's 8-bit games go against the trend and play globally. However, it must be pointed out that although Chinese game manufacturers have developed a wide variety of 8-bit games, they cannot really promote the innovation and development of the global and Chinese 8-bit gaming industry. On the contrary, if gameplay innovation is understood as the core element of game innovation, most domestic 8-bit games, including the above-mentioned original 8-bit games, only imitate the design thinking of Japanese 8-bit games, and do not create original gameplay with Chinese characteristics. In other words, from the perspective of originality, Chinese 8-bit games are a failure. They are simply low-level reproduction of Japanese games. They are inferior goods that have been industrially produced in order to realize capital appreciation. They are not literary and art works with certain innovative value. Therefore, domestic 8-bit games have always been criticized and ridiculed by players in China. Nevertheless, from a cultural point of view, domestic 8 bit games are not without merit. In the absence of domestic 8 bit games, the gaming field is full of various Orientalism discourses that distort China's image. Taking Double Dragon 3 as an example, CHIN SEIMEI, one of the main characters of the game, and some scenes in the game have a strong Orientalism, which reflects the Orientalism imagination of foreign game designers on China when developing the game, which greatly hurts China's national image and deepens the prejudice of players against China. In this sense, domestic 8 bit games have certain cultural value. The emergence of domestic 8 bit games enables players to come into contact with a relatively "real" Chinese imagination, which enables players to enter the Chinese way of thinking to understand and imagine a cultural China. Unfortunately, there is a fatal flaw in domestic 8-bit games, that is, most of the domestic 8-bit games are not strong in gameplay——even many games are full of Bug——and it is difficult for players to get a complete game experience. As a result, the market sales of domestic 8 bit games are actually poor, and they cannot be the main force to promote the development of China's game industry. Of course, this is not to say that "fun" is the only criterion for evaluating a game. We can't know the value of domestic 8-bit game only from its gameplay——in this case, domestic 8-bit game is just a poor digital toy——but we should go deep into the social and historical context behind it, discuss the interaction between 8-bit game text and its production practice and social text, and take Chinese 8-bit game history as a symptom and metaphor of contemporary China to understand its historical significance. As far as 8 bit game is concerned, it played a role in "liberating" Chinese teenagers' thoughts in 1990s. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, under the leadership of the socialist view of literature and art, the main functions of Chinese local children's cultural products, such as comic strips and art films, are to carry forward revolutionary narratives and educate people morally. Although these cultural products use the product form that teenagers like, because their contents generally lack vitality, in a sense, they are only the continuation of the rigid socialist education system and ideological system in the field of teenagers' culture. After the reform and opening up (1978- ), Japan's 8 bit games, comics, animation and other youth subculture products flooded into China through formal and informal channels, and formed a huge scale in the 1990s, which strongly impacted the above-mentioned rigid cultural situation. The unrestrained cultural imagination of these Japanese cultural products has brought great ideological shock to Chinese youth, thus causing the fierce collision between Japanese youth subculture and the rigid mainstream culture dominated by the authorities, and gradually gaining the upper hand. It can even be considered that this is the beginning of Chinese teenagers' "emancipating the mind". It is in this historical context that domestic 8 bit games are produced. Chinese game manufacturers hope to combine Chinese stories with 8 bit game technology, and while continuing to emancipate players' minds, they will still strengthen players' interest in Chinese culture. However, due to their limited technical ability, they can only construct a Chinese-style discourse expression system in content, but cannot create new ways to attract players, which makes 8-bit games fall into the dilemma of market sales, that is, these games place too much emphasis on the local discourse in the game content, while ignoring the creation of fun gameplay itself——in other words, the symbolic value of 8-bit games always overrides its use value——so the sales of most domestic 8-bit games are not good, or even bleak. For the development of domestic 8-bit games in the future, the only way to get out of the predicament is to continue to develop 8-bit games with Chinese atmosphere firmly, and on the other hand, to explore the possibility of innovative 8-bit gameplay, so as to continue to promote the sustainable development of 8-bit games, a neglected market segment in China.
