이 글의 영어 원문은 아래 링크에서 보실 수 있습니다: www.gamegeneration.or.kr Randomness is a double-edged sword. The opposite reception of randomness in AAA and indie game sectors It seems fascinating that the same mathematical phenomenon could become the foundation of the most acclaimed and the most despised design principles of modern gaming. As I will argue in this article, this is precisely what happened to randomness. - Towards more responsible representational practices in games
How we talk about a medium reveals a lot about who we consider its target audience or user and what purposes we attribute to their engagement with the medium. The public discourse on digital games in both Europe and North America, have for many years been characterized by the idea, that digital games was, roughly speaking, for young, teenage boys, who spend hours upon hours painted by the luminescence of the computer screen and immersed in mindless entertainment. This was of course never true. < Back Towards more responsible representational practices in games 04 GG Vol. 22. 2. 10. - 이 글의 한글 번역본은 아래 링크에서 보실 수 있습니다: https://gamegeneration.or.kr/board/post/view?pageNum=1&match=id:88 Towards more responsible representational practices in games How we talk about a medium reveals a lot about who we consider its target audience or user and what purposes we attribute to their engagement with the medium. The public discourse on digital games in both Europe and North America, have for many years been characterized by the idea, that digital games was, roughly speaking, for young, teenage boys, who spend hours upon hours painted by the luminescence of the computer screen and immersed in mindless entertainment. This was of course never true. Recently, however, many people have begun questioning this stereotype gamer and exploring the diversity of people who actually play games. But who are these ‘other’ players then? They may be toddlers who play their first game on their parents’ smartphone, the retired woman immersed in a game of Wordfeud, the ‘granny gamer’ playing CS: Go with their grandchild. But they may also be gaymers socializing around a game of Fortnite, or the young mother playing on her Nintendo Switch while her baby sleeps next to her and so on. Critiquing the norms of game culture Digital games are of course not played by stereotypes but by actual players who experience the games they play in unique and individual ways. During the last 10 years, game journalists, cultural critics and scholars have discussed the issue of representation of gender, ethnicity, disability, age, and bodies and in mainstream games. Although these discussions took off with the greatest intensity in North America, they are now also gaining speed in a European context under the heading of norm critique. The discussions about representation in games are essentially about three things: First, how does games portray different identities or aspects of peoples’ identities, if at all. Second, what is the representation of marginalized people in the player base of different games. And third, how are marginalized people represented in the game industry and under what conditions are they working. These three things are often intertwined in public discourse. It is often assumed that if a game represents someone, e.g., women, in a negative way, female players will generally turn away from the games. It is also often assumed that better representation of marginalized people in the game industry will result in better portrayals of these people in the game. Although there is certainly some truth to this, game scholars have also pointed out, that reality is much more complex than that. Games addressing serious topics Several studies have revealed a long-lasting imbalance in the number of female game characters, their roles and function in the game, and found that in their visual appearance, female characters have typically been highly sexualized. An analysis of over 500 games released between 1983 -2014 shows, that the sexualization of the female body peaked in the late 90’s and have been declining since 2006. This decline may mark a slow change in the way that the overall game industry thinks about their own games and its ability to address and raise awareness of serious topics. When British game company Ninja Theory, for example, released their game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in 2017, creative director of the company, Tameem Antoniades, explained in an interview that they wanted the game to be more than just entertainment, as they tried to offer an experience of how it is to suffer from psychosis, that would feel true to player. Similarly, Forgotten, a Danish indie game demo released in 2018, aimed to represent what it feels like to suffer from Alzheimer disease. The game is currently under development by Autoscopia Interactive. The European indie game industry has also started considering how to tell stories from the perspectives of socially and economically marginalized people. Bury me, my love, developed by French game company The Pixel Hunt, tells the story of a Syrian refugee as she makes her way through Europe to Paris. When another British AAA-game company, Playground Games, released the fifth installment in their racing game series Forza Horizon in Autumn 2021, it reached the headlines of mainstream media, that the character creation module in the game allowed players to choose gender-neutral pronouns to their character, as well as fit their characters with prosthetic limbs. Although much debate focusses on the representation of game characters, inclusive game design is of course not limited to this specific issue. The emergence of the indie game industry also sees an increase of games that delivers experiences that go beyond the well-tested model of the AAA-industry and offers modes of play that catered to players who cannot afford sitting several hours fixed in front of a computer. This is particularly true in Denmark where the game industry is mostly comprised of small-scale, indie developers, except from a few bigger studios such as IO Interactive. *Forgotten is a short game that aims to convey the experience of how it is to live with Altzheimer’s disease. In the image, the faces of game characters are blurred to give a sense of memory loss and disorientation. Expanding the player base This slow change can in part be explained by the second issue – the diversity of the player base. It seems that the game industry is becoming increasingly willing to try to reach a new target audience and in different ways cater for the diversity of the player base. Research shows that there is no direct causal relation between the representation of marginalized identities in games, and the diversity of the player base, and that marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ-people, have played games despite negative portrayals of LGBTQ characters in the game. As even mainstream media have gained an interest in the problematic portrayals of marginalized people in games, it becomes increasingly difficult for game companies to continue to reproduce these negative stereotypes. On the other hand, this public discourse also serves as an incentive to the game industry to latch onto new target demographics with strong spending powers. However, negative portrayals of marginalized identities in games only account for half of the problem. Many marginalized groups still experience bullying, discrimination and abusive behavior when playing especially online games. Here, it is interesting to note, that when it comes to the marginalization of players, the discourse in Europe primarily revolves around the experience of (young) female players. The conditions of other marginalized groups, such as various ethnicities, socially- and economically marginalized people, and so on, are still lacking in the public discussions. This means, that while game have begun to tackle the issue of how to respectfully convey the stories of these marginalized identities, the game industry, have still not grasped the potential of addressing these groups as players. Improving working conditions through unionizing The marginalization of people in the game industry have received considerable attention in the last couple of years. Although this issue already attracted attention ten years ago, when marginalized workers, and especially female workers, of the game industry began spreading stories of discrimination, sexism, and harassment under the hashtag #1ReasonWhy , these issues have made the headlines again the last couple of years, as toxic work culture, sexual misconduct and abusive behavior have been exposed in the European AAA-industry. In the context of North Europe, scandals of a similar magnitude have yet to be exposed, although media stories have documented some cases of abusive conduct. Trade unions appear as obvious institutions to tackle such issue and better the conditions for marginalized workers. But even though the Scandinavian countries generally have a strong tradition for unionizing, it should be noted that worker in the Scandinavian game industry are still not by large unionized. Therefore, while many discussions are ongoing in the public discourse about how games responsibly represent marginalized people and how to provide an inclusive culture for players falling outside the normative stereotype of the male gamer, the is still call for a change in the organization of the game industry.
- No Game for Young Men
While some critics pointed out similarities between Kart Rider and Nintendo’s Mario Kart series, this controversy did not concern its players, especially the young kids already enjoying the game—myself included. Kart Rider marked a pivotal moment in Nexon’s history, peaking at 200,000 concurrent players (in a country of 50 million people), dominating the PC-bang market, and reaching 10 million registered accounts in 2005, within just a year of its release. In 2023, after 18 years of service, Kart Rider was replaced by its sequel, Kart Rider: Drift, though the reception to this successor has been mixed and is still unable to surpass the legacy of its predecessor. < Back No Game for Young Men 20 GG Vol. 24. 10. 10. https://www.gamegeneration.or.kr/article/64ec6d72-3c26-4dc7-b6bc-91c99e7c0b02 Unfortunately, I am not one of the “young men” nor do I have kids—yet. So I felt a bit uneasy when the Game Generation (GG) editorial team first asked me to write about recent trends in the game industry with a focus on children's gameplay. My initial response to the team was, “How about finding a new writer who’s a parent, someone who has kids?" I tried to politely decline the offer. However, the editor-in-chief replied, “Wouldn’t it be more objective to discuss this issue from the perspective of someone without kids?” And there I was, realizing not only how excited we were about this topic but also how cleverly they had lured me into it. Well, at least I was once a child myself. I belong to the South Korean generation that was once called the “PC-bang Zerglings,” named after a unit in the Starcraft (Blizzard, 1998) game series. It was the mid-2000s, a time when Kart Rider (Nexon, 2004) was seen as a nationwide kids' phenomenon in South Korea. Every Saturday, I would rush to the PC-bang with my classmates. I’ll probably never forget the experience of eagerly pressing the "Shift" key (for drifting in Kart Rider) amidst the haze of acrid cigarette smoke (FYI, smoking was still allowed in those places back then).Online games like Lineage (NCsoft, 1998) and Mu (Webzen, 2001) were widely popular among adult players in Korean PC-bangs at that time. There were also several games that kids could play, such as Maple Story (Nexon, 2003), QPlay (also known as Quiz Quiz) (Nexon, 1999), and Mabinogi (Nexon, 2004). Of course, some kids were eager to move past their childhood and went straight to playing FPS games or more 'adult-like' MMORPGs. However, there was always one game that every kid knew how to play: the legendary Kart Rider. * Kart Rider was truly a nationwide form of entertainment enjoyed by people of all ages in South Korea. At the heart of this phenomenon were the young players. Kart Rider was incredibly popular in Korea at the time. The magazine “Cine 21”, a highly regarded publication that covers a wide range of cultural sectors like films and media, once referred to the game as “Kookmin” (meaning “national” or “of the people”) due to its widespread acceptance among the Korean public [1] . The magazine attributed the game’s popularity to its "child-like play experience", highlighting its simple gameplay mechanics and charming cartoon-style characters that stood out from previous racing games. Jung-ju “Jay” Kim, the founder of Nexon, once remarked, “It is amazing to see how children and their parents willingly spend their own money and wait in long lines in queue to enjoy Disney content”, adding, “They do so happily of their own will, without being forced or being lured” [2] . This reflected Nexon's approach to its young players in the 2000s: to create games that would naturally attract kids (and their parents), encouraging them to engage and enjoy happily at their own will. This philosophy is evident in many of Nexon’s early 2000s game portfolios, with Kart Rider at the forefront. Another major success that followed was Maple Story, although I won’t delve into the game’s ups and downs over the years, like recent controversies around Maple Story’s heavy and toxic micro-transactions. Interestingly and ironically, Nexon is currently researching and developing a blockchain version of Maple Story [3] . There was a time when the world felt simpler, and Koreans shared similar experiences nationwide. The label “Kookmin (people of the nation)” was frequently attached to various phenomena in the 2000s—Kookmin actors for acclaimed actors, Kookmin popular dishes for widely-enjoyed new menus, and famous Kookmin songs that everyone listens to together. The game Kart Rider was indeed among these “Kookmin” icons. However, two decades later, in the 2020s, the world has become more diversified, complex, and arguably more fragmented. People no longer gravitate toward a single cultural trend; instead, the ability to recognize and embrace individual preferences has become more important. Henceforth, the era of “Kookmin” is over. For example, my grandmother wouldn’t know Pani Bottle or JB Kwak, some of the most famous YouTubers among South Korean Gen Z. Similarly, Gen Z has little interest in her favourite trot music shows, a genre that is popular among Korean boomers. With that in mind, here’s a quiz for our adult Korean readers: Have you heard of “Sibling War (also known as “hhnm”)? This YouTuber, with over 2.8 million subscribers, is overwhelmingly popular with South Korean kids, particularly those in elementary school. As such, mass media is no longer what it once was. There is no longer a singular, large-scale media that is embraced by all generations. In the past, Koreans would rush home to watch the same K-drama on TV and eagerly discuss the plot with friends and colleagues the next morning. Those days are now a thing of the past. It has become increasingly difficult to know what kinds of content different segments of society, particularly children, are consuming. Combined with the country’s historically low birth rate (Korea has the lowest birth rate among OECD countries, with 0.7 births per woman in 2023), Korea is becoming a less appealing place for young people as their population rapidly declines. It is now harder for adults to meet, interact with, and understand the younger generation. Unless you have children, it’s nearly impossible to know what Korean kids are enjoying or demanding these days. Fortunately for me, I have a nephew. So I decided to "interview" him to find out what content kids are currently into. Soon after I started the conversation, we quickly realized we had one topic in common; the legendary Pokémon series. With my excitement, my nephew said, “Yes, I also know the 1st generation Pokémon!” But the conversation didn’t last long. It soon became clear that, aside from Pokémon, we didn’t share many common media experiences. Readers might want to try this with their younger relatives and see how many things they have in common. But be prepared for responses like, “Who watches The Haunted House (2016) these days?” or “Nah, Pororo the Little Penguin (2003) is for babies!” (Even if your nephew might still look like a baby to you.) And neither of these are digital games. If we take a look at games, there are even fewer games to talk about with children these days. One reliable source on this trend is the "Comprehensive Report on Children and Adolescents’ Game Usage" published by the Korea Creative Content Agency in 2023. The study found that 65.2% of children and adolescents in Korea play some form of smartphone game. Popular titles include sandbox games like Minecraft and Roblox (23.7%), followed by first-person or third-person shooting games (23.5%) such as Brawl Stars, Valorant, and Sudden Attack [4] . Game genre (%) RPGs (e.g., Cookie Run: Kingdom, Dungeon Fighter Online, Maple Story, World of Warcraft, Blade & Soul, Mabinogi, etc) 8.9 AOS games (e.g., League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Dota, etc) 9.2 FPS/TPS games (e.g., Brawl Stars, Sudden Attack, PUBG, Overwatch, Valorant, etc) 23.5 RTS games (e.g., Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Starcraft, etc) 2.6 Sports games (e.g., FIFA, Director Manru, Magumagu, FreeStyle Street Basketball 2, etc) 10.5 Casual games (e.g., Candy Crush Saga, Friends Pop, etc) 3.8 Sandbox games (e.g., Minecraft, Roblox, etc) 23. Others (e.g., web games, board games, racing games, arcade games) (e.g., Kart Rider, TalesRunner, Crazy Arcades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Modoo Marble, Super Star, etc) 17.8% * Games that are most enjoyed by children and adolescents in Korea (source: Korea Creative Content Agency, 2023) Sandbox games are those where players can freely create their own worlds and experiences, much like playing in a sandbox. Roblox, for example, is a platform accessed by over 150 million children globally each month. Essentially, it’s difficult to know what's trending in the virtual world of Roblox without logging in and observing or participating, like how you wouldn’t know what’s trending on YouTube without understanding how the platform functions. These days, children are exposed to a wide range of games within the Roblox platform and the Roblox world itself is regarded as a virtual gaming experience. According to my nephew's keen analysis, one of the most popular games on the Roblox platform right now is “Adopt Me!” However, he says there are “too many (naïve) kids” in the game, so he recently switched to another Roblox game called “Murder”, where the players reportedly behave a bit better. Overhearing our conversation, my nephew’s guardian expressed concern about the violence in “Murder” and immediately suggested banning him from playing—and seeking my support. But to secure the continuous access of knowledge from my informant, I responded, “Nah, he will be fine”. It’s also interesting to see that Sudden Attack (Nexon, 2005) is still listed as one of the games enjoyed by minors today. Perhaps that is because this new generation no longer gets game-related information from TV or magazines as we did in the past. Instead, minors in South Korea seem to discover games by watching game streamers and influencers that they follow. Recent studies have also found that these young players tend to enjoy games in a relatively reactive manner. For instance, they start playing the game when it becomes a common topic of interest within their social circle, like school friends. Coming from that context, it appears Sudden Attack’s old-style polygon graphics, as the game was released nearly two decades ago in 2005, doesn’t seem to bother young Korean players at all—as they value social experience through the game, and thus, as long as the game is enjoyable with their peers. My nephew (currently my only source of information) is too young to play Sudden Attack, as the game is rated 15+. But it was clear that he wasn’t interested in playing the game anyway because no one in his immediate schoolmates was playing the game (or even allowed to play it). Then it’s not worth the effort to go through the hassle of getting parental consent, installing and playing the game when there’s no social benefit thereof. Come to think of it, I think accessing the game by fake-using our parent’s ID was much easier back then in the 2000s before the time of two-factor authentication—I’ve been there, done that. According to Gallup Korea Research Group, 44% of males and 13% of females in their teens listed “gaming” as their favourite hobby [5] . This evidently indicates that gaming still remains a popular leisure activity among the younger generation. However, it’s unfortunate that fewer and fewer new games are being released in Korea targeting the younger audience. If we refer back to the 2023 Korea Creative Content Agency report, the only Korean game title on the list is Cookie Run: Kingdom (Devsisters, 2021), and that’s already three years old. It seems the Korean game industry no longer finds interest in making games for children with the decline in Korea’s birth rate and the overall number of younger population. Perhaps it’s no longer a profitable business. I can already see that it’s probably easier to pitch your game business to shareholders by saying, "We’re making games for adults in their 40s with disposable income" than saying that you’re interested in making games for teenagers. There was a time when games were considered childish—something that only youngsters would enjoy. Back then, kids would gather at arcades and PC-bangs. Now, it’s far less common to see young people in those places perhaps due to the declining number of children or the decline of arcades and PC-bangs. Or, it’s perhaps both. Let’s take a look at mobile games. In the Korean Apple App Store, the top five game apps in the “Kids” section are: YouTube Kids in first place, followed by the colouring game Quiber in second, the sandbox game Toca Boca World in third, Band Kids in fourth, and i-Nara in fifth. To me, only Quiber and Toca Boca World can really be considered “games,” while the others are more like social media or e-learning apps. YouTube Kids is also ranked first in Google Play’s kids’ section. Notably, both major mobile app platforms in Korea are dominated by apps focused on providing wholesome, educational content for minors. It’s interesting that Roblox, arguably the most popular game among children, isn’t on the list. It is directly provided by its developer, Roblox Corporation, and it is filled with games made by young creators. This makes me wonder: Is this a country where games for children can and will continue to exist? Will we ever see new games targeting younger players emerge in Korea again? * App Store’s “Kid” section, retrieved on May 31st 2024. There are hardly any games on the list. You can see the Korean version of this article at below URL: www.gamegeneration.or.kr It seems fascinating that the same mathematical phenomenon could become the foundation of the most acclaimed and the most despised design principles of modern gaming. As I will argue in this article, this is precisely what happened to randomness. Even though randomness has always been a part of game development, it could be argued that it has exploded in popularity over the last decade. In many ways, we live in a golden age of randomness in games. To understand some of the observations made in the later parts of this article, we have to start with a critical distinction between perceived and objective randomness. Perceived randomness deals with our ability to recognize patterns. If an event in the game feels as if it happened "out of the blue," or if it seems that it could just as well not appear in a second playthrough, we may classify it as random. Needless to say, the fact something feels entirely erratic for us does not mean the developer didn't carefully plan it. In contrast, objective randomness is the real deal – objectively random things are genuinely random, regardless of our knowledge. Many positive and negative sides of randomness stem from the difference between perceived and objective randomness. For example, even though achieving genuine randomness on computers has always been a challenge, programmers did not have to worry about it too much because all they had to achieve was an appearance of randomness. Designers of old recreations of casinos (such as Casino Kid for the NES) did not have to worry about genuine randomness because all that mattered was that the game delivered a decent casino-like experience. Things started to be much more problematic once gambling-like mechanics began to be combined with actual currency purchases. The combination of randomness and microtransactions leads us to the dark side of our story of randomness in modern game design. The most well-known illustration of the problem comes from the debate on lootboxes that took gaming by storm seven years ago. When EA launched its sequel to Star Wars Battlefield II, the company surely did not expect the backlash from the players who were unhappy with how important lootboxes became to the gameplay. It suffices to point out that the Reddit post about the game received the dubious accolade of being the most downvoted message on any of over 100 thousand subforums. The upshot of this scandal was that some European countries introduced legal measures to limit or even ban loot boxes from games as the legislators started to see games as casinos in disguise. Many game developers decided to change their games and replace lootboxes with other systems, such as season passes (Overwatch 2). Other companies revealed the odds for loot boxes, forcing them to show how low these odds really were. Despite all these actions, random mechanics that function identically to loot boxes (even though they do not use the same visual representation) are very prominent, especially in so-called gacha games that started to be a global phenomenon around after the launch of Genshin Impact. It is also worth remembering that revealing the odds cannot be seen as a silver bullet – the odds of dice or roulette are clear for everybody to see, but it does not make these games unproblematic. As I mentioned, people criticizing lootboxes mainly focused on their similarity to gambling. Even though this comparison is sometimes warranted, it obfuscates two crucial differences that make randomness in games even more problematic than in casinos. The first problem comes from the so-called "gambler's fallacy," which boils down to a sentiment that the more you lose in a game of chance, the more likely you are to win finally. Ideally, the feeling should go away once you realize that it can't be true – the next flip of a coin does not "know" that all the previous flips were unlucky. Still, many rational people cannot shake the feeling that "luck has to finally come," which leads them to continue spending. What is strange about digital games is that this feeling may actually be rational, so the risk of people spending more money on subsequent draws is bigger. Developers who fear the loss of unlucky players may easily introduce "pity mechanics" that guarantee a valuable drop. It is also fairly common to control the drops the players get during initial sections of the game as the creators want to be sure the player gets the intended, optimal experience before they are thrown in at the deep end of randomness. The second problem relates to the so-called "sunken cost fallacy". Gamblers who lost a lot in a given game of chance may continue losing because they treat their loss as an investment. They feel that stopping during an unlucky streak confirms it was unlucky – in their mind, stopping almost "makes" the streak unlucky. This sentiment is entirely irrational in traditional games of chance, but online games make it possible for developers to target specific players. Some developers openly advise mobile game creators to target their big spenders to offer them special deals or even change the whole game to their liking. What it means in practice is that spending a lot (even if it is losing) can be treated as an investment by some players, who could then feel entitled to get special treatment from the creators. If I focused only on the so-called AAA and Free2play industries, the dark patterns described above would have been the only topic of my article. And yet, during the same decade, the phenomenon of randomness became the central mechanism of games created by independent developers as well. What is fascinating, though, is that it was used in a completely different way that did not result in heated ethical debates. On the contrary, it can be pointed out as the main reason for the origin of new popular genres, such as open-world survival games, and the resurgence of old genres, such as roguelikes. It can be argued that randomness and the success of modern indie games go hand-in-hand. What is the reason randomness is so popular with independent developers? It seems that it comes from a very lucky confluence of several factors. The chief reason is that employing randomness helps to cut development costs. Independent game developers do not create their games in a vacuum and must adapt to new game habits and expectations of players conditioned on big-budget games. Their games couldn't compete in production values, but they could offer the players value for money differently. For example, they could promise much better replayability, a wider variety of power-ups and weapons, or bigger open worlds. As it happens, all of these advantages could be gained through skillful usage of randomness. Even though roguelike games are one of the oldest genres in gaming (the original Rogue dates to 1980), they functioned as a dormant, niche genre for almost 30 years just to gain mainstream popularity during the last decade. The main reason for this unusual trajectory was that the developers deconstructed the genre and infused many other genres with roguelike randomness. Two games that paved the way for this development were Spelunky (2008) and The Binding of Isaac (2011). Before the release of these games, roguelikes were often treated as very rigid wholes. They had to contain perma-death, random environments, and loot, but, more importantly, they had to belong to the RPG genre. The roguelike revolution happened when people realized that there is nothing that prevents us from using the same type of randomness in virtually any genre. Random environment generation became the foundation for another hugely successful genre – survival games that followed the release of Minecraft. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons for their popularity was the novel mechanic of crafting and survival, which existed in older games only in a simplified and secondary manner. Still, we should not disregard how much randomness helped to popularize the genre. Independent games' budget limitations prevented developers from creating games in specific genres. Making an open-world game similar to GTA or Skyrim with small resources is challenging. The same goes for live service games that must be constantly updated and maintained. Procedurally generated worlds and the early access model popularized by Minecraft solved these problems for independent developers and allowed them to deliver experiences that could compete with AAA development regarding sales and player engagement. Even though procedurally generated worlds cannot compete with handcrafted ones in terms of intricate detail or authenticity, they can easily surpass them with scale, promising infinite explorability. On the other hand, games that use randomness to ensure no two play sessions are the same do not have to worry about players becoming hungry for new content. The ease of production extends to more liberal design practices, making game development more manageable for small teams. Having an unlucky or lucky run in roguelike games is part of the experience, and nobody expects the developers to make sure every draw of luck is "fair" or balanced. In fact, having situations that seem broken from the design standpoint (that are too overpowered or helpless) can often contribute to the games' popularity on streaming services. Many streamers seek extreme, unique situations, and randomness is the mechanism that is here to deliver. To sum up, the popularity of randomness in the current gaming industry and the two extreme ways it is treated may be initially surprising but is far from a coincidence. It can be explained once we look at how randomness contributed to analog games in the past. Throwing dice or sticks, shuffling cards, etc., are very old mechanics used across the globe to add the effect of surprise and replayability. They allowed simple rule sets to be used for hundreds of years. At the same time, the same actions could be easily misused whenever we make them the central mechanic and turn entertainment into gambling.
