TEXT: Snodgrass, J. G., Dengah, H. F., Upadhyay, C., Else, R. J., & Polzer, E. (2021). Indian Gaming Zones as Oppositional Subculture: A Norm Incongruity "Cultural Dissonance" Approach to Internet Gaming Pleasure and Distress. Current Anthropology , 62(6), 771–797. "The moment of feeling guilty while doing what you love" arrives more often than one might think. Especially when what you have to do and what you want to do do not coincide, and when the latter is regarded as socially undesirable. For young gamers who have grown up loving games, this ambivalence is probably no stranger. As fandom, punk, and otaku cultures once were, games too are, for some, a cultural practice that offers the most intense pleasure and sense of belonging. Yet that very pleasure also collides with the social prejudice surrounding games, breeding anxiety and guilt. In this way games have, at the intersection where pleasure and stigma, belonging and anxiety cross, conversely driven an even stronger addictive immersion—and as a result have formed a subculture that shares norms and an identity all its own. The paper this piece takes up sets out to unpack the gaming subculture of young men in emerging adulthood (the transitional stage between childhood and adulthood) in the small city of Udaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Bearing the title "Indian Gaming Zones as Oppositional Subculture," it explores how online game play offers Udaipur's youth an alternative subcultural identity as gamers, and why they experience games so addictively amid pleasure and guilt. Background and the Cultural Dissonance Perspective This study sets out to view the phenomenon of "game addiction" through the lens of medical anthropology, which studies a particular social group's illness or suffering within a cultural and social context beyond the merely physical. To explain the ambivalent phenomenon of Udaipur's youth becoming ever more fervently immersed in games even while wracked by anxiety about the future, the researchers draw in part on the concepts of the medical anthropologist Dressler. Dressler held that what determines an individual's physical and mental health includes not only material factors such as income, nutrition, and access to care, but also the relationship between the cultural values an individual holds and the social expectations surrounding them. To this end he developed the concept of cultural consonance, which shows how closely an individual matches the beliefs and behaviors grounded in their own cultural values to the cultural model shared in society. That is, the concept of cultural consonance shows that an individual's health can vary according to "whether they can actually realize the cultural life they believe to be important." So what becomes of an individual placed in a situation where cultural consonance fails to occur—where the values they hold important and society's expectations diverge? For this, the researchers add to cultural consonance the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance (the tendency of an individual to suffer when they cannot remove the incompatibility between their beliefs and attitudes), developing the perspective of cultural dissonance. Through this concept, the study seeks to read Udaipur youth's gaming subculture not as the addiction or antisocial avoidance of a simple pathologizing discourse, but as a psychosocial negotiation that tries to minimize the conflict between online and offline life. Next, it is worth noting the sociocultural background of Udaipur, India, against which this piece is set. The study's participants are Indian men in their early twenties, either in their final year of high school or attending university. According to the authors, young Indian men up to the age of twenty-five are basically regarded as student- brahmacharya —occupying a stage of preparation for becoming the head of a household. Most of Udaipur's youth marry through arranged marriage, and until then they live under pressure to acquire both the means to provide as a head of household and the ability to secure a good bride. Most, even after marriage, live with their parents or, even if they move out, stay close to them and are positioned to support them. In such a society, where the role of the (prospective) head of household is strongly imprinted, the act of enjoying games is readily defined as an "addiction" that easily diminishes a young man's reputation and jeopardizes his future career or marriage prospects. Meanwhile, Udaipur is a place where access to social media and games is reasonably well established, thanks to the spread of mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and internet technology. Many participants could therefore enjoy online games like Counter-Strike without difficulty in offline spaces such as gaming zones. A "gaming zone" is an in-person gaming café in India, similar to a Korean PC bang, equipped with high-spec networks and PC hardware. Most participants, though middle class or owning a PC at home, nonetheless visited these places together with friends, playing while interacting with online users through text and voice chat. Most young gamers showed themselves struggling to become "true gamers," clocking in at the gaming zone daily—to the point that some treated every Sunday as "Full Rush day" and played all day long. Methods To analyze its subject, the study combined at least three research methods. First, to explore the process by which Udaipur's young men become immersed in games and acquire a gamer identity, the researchers conducted an ethnography accompanied by participant observation over six weeks across three gaming zones. The regular players—generally about twelve to fifteen at each zone—became the focus, with observation accompanied by field notes carried out in the morning and evening for at least an hour and a half and at most about three hours. Second, they conducted informal interviews with the youth who regularly appeared at the gaming zones. The interviews sought to cover not only their accounts of gaming and gamer identity but also the pressures of career and marriage they faced in life. Third, through a survey they identified the four core components of the "true gamer" identity model these youth pursued, and sought to grasp how these components connected to their positive and negative gaming experiences. The four core components are the four elements revealed in the ethnography described below (having close gamer friends, a sense of connection to the global gamer community, the dream of becoming a pro gamer, and a sense of belonging to the gamer subculture), while positive and negative gaming experiences were measured using a 21-item instrument following Dressler's methodology. In this process the researchers hypothesized that the closer Udaipur's youth felt to the true-gamer identity, the more they could experience not only positive gaming experiences (pleasure) but also negative ones (the distress that accompanies it). Finally, performing a measurement based on the three analyses above, they derived a cultural model of the positive and negative gaming held by Udaipur's youth and sought to analyze how it aligned with individual health outcomes. Ethnographic Methods and Findings Everybody Knows Everybody First, India's gaming zones had settled in as powerful spaces of friendship for Udaipur's youth. They came at first in search of a good environment for gaming, but over time they became so close as to be like family, each knowing everyone else. They spend more than half their time at the gaming zone not as players but as "spectators." While spectating they shout instructions and commands to teammates or online friends, and during breaks they drink tea or smoke and discuss the next strategy. At the gaming zone they interact by cursing, shouting loudly, teasing, and playfully hitting one another—behaviors not easily tolerated in public spaces until now. Most of them write their names on their cigarettes with a marker and keep them in the gaming-zone owner's drawer. The cigarettes, tea, and snacks traded at the gaming zone likewise serve as an informal "currency of friendship." The Global Gamer Community Udaipur's youth formed friendships and communicated with diverse players around the world through the global game platform Steam. Most participants played Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , and the global network they encountered there made them transcend their national and religious identities. A guildmate living in Iraq might come into the game and relay the news that fighting in his country had quieted down; they might naturally team up and play with Pakistani Muslims. For as long as they played here, they were simply "gamers," and other affiliations such as caste, religion, or geography were secondary. Participants enjoyed using Hinglish (the Indian English of native Hindi speakers) during play to display their command of English and their fluency in game knowledge. The points at which they distinguished themselves as "true gamers" from others were their passion for gaming, the English ability that created a global sense of belonging, and a particular pattern of consumption (symbolized by cigarettes, energy drinks, and junk food) by which they could define themselves as "addicts." Dreams of the Digital Age What benefits did participants feel games offered? They answered that gaming gave them passion, motivation, and a competitive drive that could help them in life. They took particular pleasure in the process of honing and steadily improving their skills. To this end they regularly watched live broadcasts of matches between famous teams, and stocked up on cigarettes and energy drinks as essentials for staying awake long hours. The gaming-zone owners, too, knew their passion and even organized local matches between zones. Intriguingly, most of Udaipur's "serious gamer" youth dreamed of debuting as pro gamers. Indian pro esports teams—like the "Indian Wolves," who became famous for playing Dota 2 —were a great inspiration for such dreams. To go pro is to be able to do what you love and, on top of that, to win the very title of "true gamer" you had so wanted. Yet at the same time they were partly aware that, coming from a small city with almost no support for games and an unstable internet, such a dream was unrealistic. Gaming as Subcultural Escape As mentioned earlier, at the gaming zone Udaipur's youth gained a kind of freedom not tolerated elsewhere in society. At the gaming zone alone, every activity was permitted—screaming, fighting, cursing, behaving roughly, and eating and drinking whatever they wanted. Many participants therefore located the pleasure of games in being able to flee the real world, forget their problems, and pass the time. Such answers are grounded in a perception of reality in which most youth feel they "have no future," as Udaipur's unemployment rate soars sky-high. Good jobs are hard to come by, marriage is in any case already foreordained through a parent-arranged match, and once they marry and become heads of household, their gaming life ends entirely. The space of the gaming zone, therefore, functioned as a kind of magic circle—temporarily separated from social norms—able to offer participants liberation or a cultural alternative from the oppressive circumstances they wished to flee. And precisely for that reason, paradoxically, this space remained importantly connected to the real-world spaces and concerns that participants would have to face again. Social Moral Panic: The Discourse of "Technological Addiction" and Emotional Distress As noted earlier, in the Hindu discourse of brahmacharya , games are regarded as an act that can ruin an important period of life-preparation. To play games during the time when men ought to be controlling and managing their "animal" impulses as much as possible before entering the household is, in itself, an unrestrained waste of time. (This was a view internalized even by the researchers, who had lived in Udaipur for decades; one researcher of traditional Brahmin background felt discomfort, during the participant-observation stage, at participants' unrestrained cursing and chain-smoking.) Moreover, the context in which games are condemned in Udaipur society is bound up, beyond the role norms of the male head of household, with a "(generational) condemnation of technology." Some of Udaipur's older generation remarked that the internet exerts a harmful influence on Indian society and that ninety percent of youth are mired in pointless internet addiction. This connects, too, with established perceptions of gender norms: that the internet draws young men and women into inappropriate relationships and, by copying Western lifestyles, has induced a trend of premarital sex and rape. The examples of proper internet use this society offered were limited to using the internet to prepare for certification exams and to learn a future trade. Surrounded by such social perceptions, most participants recognized that they were, in some form, addicted to games. Many had played a hundred hours straight without eating or sleeping, and many failed to keep up their studies—their grades falling because of games, or being barred from class for failing to meet attendance requirements. Even as they constantly explained their gaming with "we just have to do it" ( karna to hai ), they were quick and unhesitating to label themselves and their friends addicts or time-wasters. Survey and Measurement Analysis First, descriptive statistical analysis of the survey sample showed that respondents' positive gaming experiences were slightly higher than their negative ones. They felt an adequate sense of social belonging and support through the online community, but this did not mean they felt greatly lonely in their offline lives either. At the hypothesis-testing stage, the researchers examined how the four elements of the true-gamer behavioral model—having close gamer friends (H1), a sense of connection to the global gamer community (H2), the dream of becoming a pro gamer (H3), and a sense of belonging to the gamer subculture (H4)—connected to positive and negative gaming experiences. Among respondents, the stronger the first three variables, the more positive gaming experiences were reported. By contrast, a sense of belonging to the gamer subculture emerged more strongly as negative gaming experiences increased. This shows that the pleasure of gaming respondents feel also derives from belonging to a gamer counterculture that departs from the norms of mainstream Indian society. The most important point in this analysis is that, overall, positive and negative gaming experiences were strongly positively correlated. The majority of players with high positive play experiences had, at the same time, high negative play experiences, and each variable that drove positive play experiences was linked to higher negative gaming experiences. That is, in the gaming experience of Udaipur's young men, the two are not fundamentally opposed experiences but closely interrelated. Conclusion In this way, the ambivalent feelings of Udaipur's youth toward game play show that the positivity and negativity of games are not opposed perspectives, and at the same time can be read as the two faces of the "cultural dissonance" these youth experience within the gamer subculture and mainstream society. The incompatibility of the two worlds—subculture and mainstream society—is the very mechanism that splits participants' identity and consciousness in two. That they acknowledge the inherent risks even as they play shows that they are not simply isolated and sunk in the world of games, but always play on the premise of a connection to the outside world. At the same time, the researchers explain that Udaipur youth's signifying their own gaming as "addiction" is yet another way of minimizing the cognitive and emotional dissonance they face. Between the true-gamer identity and the performance of the masculinized normative role expected of them as part of Indian society, by signifying the former as a temporary addiction, they raise their future life to a relatively superior position and seek to minimize as much as possible the suffering, stress, and discordant sensations they undergo in the present. Finally, the researchers hold that the analysis of Udaipur youth's gaming experience as subculture expands the analytical lens on gamers. Until now, the problem of game addiction has been treated from a biomedical perspective as a matter of mental illness like drug or gambling addiction, or, when treated from a cultural perspective, as something like a triggering mechanism of a "moral panic" that fosters consumerism and threatens the morality of youth. But the authors argue that the very situation in which this study's participants insist "I am dangerously addicted to online games myself" renders the social-panic theory of gaming addiction incomplete. In Closing The authors' "cultural dissonance" perspective on Udaipur's youth shows, I think, the researchers' intellectual effort not to judge a particular subcultural group on the basis of a resistance-versus-submission binary. The culture these youth displayed at the gaming zone does in part oppose the norms of dominant masculinity that mainstream Indian society assumes, but at the same time they also partly internalize the stigma of being social outcasts, or "losers," who have strayed from the mainstream. Their doubled situation—neither fully assimilated into mainstream norms nor fully escaping them—manifests as the act of demoting their present position to that of a temporary addict (since they will give up gaming life in the future anyway). That said, since this is fundamentally a piece focused on how to discuss the problem of game addiction in a direction different from existing cultural approaches, it remains a limitation that the analysis of the oppositional character of Udaipur youth's subculture is not deepened. In that respect, the observation of Lesley Jo Weaver, one of the paper's principal reviewers, is highly meaningful. What the paper should have discussed further is a deeper analysis: beyond youth simply acknowledging the fact of their addiction, what they actually think about this dissonance and how concretely they try to resolve it, and further, what relationship the gamer community ultimately forms with India's patriarchal society. In particular, inasmuch as this paper recalls Paul Willis's Learning to Labour in various contexts, there is a need to take up in earnest how their cultural dissonance reproduces—or escapes—the broad norms of male-centeredness and machismo operating in the larger cultural context of Indian society. Every evening, the arcade was filled with passionate cheering Back then, there was a kind of ritual among my schoolmates. No matter what games we played, the final stage of the night was always . Gals Panic , put simply, was a territory-capture style game where you control your marker in 8 direntions-up, down, left, right, and diagonally-to claim areas and win. But stopping the explanation there would be almost a lie. In , once a territory was claimed, a “gal” appeared within that space, and upon reaching a certain percentage, a complete illustration was revealed. The game’s core appeal lay precisely in those illustrations. That was why, at the machine tucked away in the far corner of the arcade, cooperative play emerged as a means of meeting the game’s requirements. Whoever happened to have the most spare change that day became the sponsor, while the friend with the best control took the seat. Others called out incoming bullet patterns or the remaining time; some explained the next pattern, others how to trap enemy monsters. Since this was an era when you couldn’t photograph the finished result with a phone camera, the only option was to take the illustration in with your eyes. Everyone tried their hardest to store the image in their memory. This user experience (UX) is precisely the intriguing story I wish to tell. The arcade was, in every sense, a space optimized for cooperative play (Co-op). Beyond the previously mentioned Gals Panic, many other games also featured Co-op play. By virtue of the arcade’s nature—a place where many people gathered in the same physical space—even those who were not seated at the machine could participate, communicating with one another and collectively working through puzzles. In Search of Our UX In retrospect, the arcade was a space especially suited to two-player games. Most arcade machines were equipped with two seats, which naturally led to many games structured around competition between Player 1 and Player 2—but there were just as many that emphasized working together toward a shared goal. The first game that comes to mind is . Although the game was designed to allow players to choose from four characters—snow, lightning, water, and wind—in arcades it was typically limited to two-player play due to hardware constraints. Much of the fun lay in each player trapping monsters into balls and then bursting them at precisely the right moment. Belt-scrolling action games like the arcade versions of and could be said to represent the very essence of Co-op play. Two players would sit shoulder to shoulder at a cramped machine, bumping into one another as they frantically mashed the buttons. A quiet ethic of generosity was at work: yielding health recovery items to each other, or giving up buff items—or weapons—that would better suit the other player’s character. We would exchange high fives after clearing a mission, and at times, even if I had survived, I would gladly drop another 100 won to revive Player 2 rather than continue alone. Yes—paying money for someone else’s play was considered an undeniably cool thing to do in the arcade. Unless one resorted to unacceptable behavior—taking over someone else’s game, extorting money in a nearby shady alley, or secretly adding credits with a coin-up trick—everyone had to insert a 100-won coin into the machine to play. Within this strict 100-won rule, the reciprocity of sharing one’s single credit can occasionally be found in the online gaming era, in practices like quietly slipping help to newcomers. Even then, the weight of the gesture is different—it is often merely a veteran player distributing a fraction of their surplus resources. The Happiness of 100 Won With a bit of humor, the rule that everyone had to put in 100 won per game can be directly linked to what we now call P2W—Pay to Win. Because players who kept feeding more coins into a given machine naturally became more skilled, those who invested heavily in a game held a clear advantage in PvP. Once a player’s skill surpassed a certain threshold, however, they became a kind of “monster” who could see an entire game through on a single coin—earning the wary glances of the arcade owner. There was someone who would insert just one 100-won coin and spend the entire day playing , defeating everyone who challenged him. Soccer games were popular then, as they are now, so many people were waiting to play, but because he dominated the machine, its turnover rate was extremely low. In the end, what stopped him was an anonymous tip reporting that he was skipping mandatory evening self-study to be at the arcade. Friends much younger than him speculated that it was probably the arcade owner who had made the call. My personal favorite arcade game was , a shooter developed by Psikyo. I was completely absorbed by its distinctive Japanese look and feel and its thrilling gameplay. I would often walk with a close friend to a neighboring district’s arcade that had a cabinet, and that journey itself feels incomparable to anything today. In 2022, who would walk twenty minutes just to pay 100 won for a single round of a game? Game magazines existed, but it was difficult to find arcade strategies in them at the time, so during those twenty minutes on foot, my friend and I would discuss which characters to choose and how we might clear each stage. In , there was a hidden character named Ain. By inputting the command up, up, up; down, down, down; up, up, up, up, up, up, up on the selection screen, the character could be unlocked. Choosing such a hidden character for someone who didn’t know the command could itself be seen as a form of cooperation. In that sense, Co-op also functioned within PvP games like . Much like selecting “Orochi Iori” for a friend in KOF ’97—officially known as Insane Iori with Blood of Orochi Under the Night of the Moon. 3 Meters to a ‘Real-Life fight’ Couples often played games like or at the arcade. The sound of laughter, mixed with the rapid pounding of domed buttons, remains part of the memory. In many ways, feels like it presented a prototype for , which was named Game of the Year by multiple outlets in 2021. Both are two-player games, and both carry the risk that excessive immersion in play can result in damage to the relationship itself. Back when I was a regular arcade-goer, I once witnessed a couple arguing while playing , with one accusing the other of not going easy on them—“Why won’t you let me win?” In truth, fights between couples were usually just playful affirmations of affection, often endearingly minor in scale. But during competitive fighting games, there were occasions when disputes between two burly men escalated to the point that all gameplay in the arcade came to a halt. At the arcade in my neighborhood, there was once a physical fight during after one player repeatedly used Devil’s laser attacks, prompting the other to shout, “Stop using cheap tactics.” In arcade fighting games, after all, your opponent’s face sits directly across from your own. What Does Offline Co-op Mean to Us Today? We now live in an online era. Even to play —a game often regarded as a tribute to offline Co-op, with its many embedded mini-games—two people no longer need to meet in the same physical space. With a single click on an online “invite friend” button, they can depart together into the game world. So what meaning does offline cooperative play still hold for us? To be sure, the Nintendo Switch still offers many excellent party games, and even without software, solving puzzles together at an escape room café could also be considered a form of Co-op. Yet offline Co-op seems to have been pushed out of the mainstream, relegated to the realm of nostalgia. The experience of multiple people reacting together to a single screen is becoming a special event rather than an everyday occurrence. When offline Co-op in arcades was at its peak, access to the internet for new information was (relatively) scarce. Few households had consoles or PCs capable of running games, and of course, not everyone carried a phone in their pocket. The only way to leave a record of one’s play was to inscribe one’s initials on the leaderboard. In offline Co-op, each and every game mattered. In the online era, access to “a single game” has improved beyond comparison. Yet alongside this, we also see people who, shielded by the veil of anonymity during gameplay, unleash words they would otherwise hesitate to utter. In online random matchmaking, people sometimes insult casually—and disappear just as casually. Having lived through both eras, this is not an attempt to claim that “the arcade days were better.” The offline Co-op culture of old arcades also included various abuses carried out by so-called neighborhood toughs. Nevertheless, if we take the term UX literally—as the totality of user experience—then the distinctive environment of the arcade explored here deserves to be recorded as a special chapter in the history of game UX.
Originally a term of derision for the slapdash Edo-period costume dramas churned out in bulk, it is now used as a genre label covering films, novels, games, and plays in which samurai, ninja, and the like carry on their action with bladed weapons. There is even a sport called chanbara that uses foam swords and padded weapons, so the term itself can be said to circulate widely, indifferent to genre or medium. Chanbara first came into popular use in the dawn of the Japanese film industry, from the 1920s up to the defeat of 1945. Chanbara theater did exist in the late nineteenth century, but it was the costume dramas mass-produced from the silent era onward—taking swordplay as their central material—that fixed the word in popular usage. In the period when imperial Japan was beginning its wars in earnest, the chanbara costume drama was also pressed into service as nationalist propaganda emphasizing bushido . By one count, six thousand costume dramas were produced in Japan from 1908 up to the defeat, a figure equal to half the films made in the country.[1] Not all of these, of course, would have been chanbara films. Poster for the arcade game Chanbara (top) and the cover of Onechanbara*, released on PS2 (bottom).* For this reason chanbara can be seen as a subgenre of popular culture boasting a history of more than a hundred years. Games that actively took up chanbara can be found from the 1980s, the moment when richly varied graphics began to appear in earnest. From Sega's arcade game Samurai (侍, 1979) and Data East's side-scrolling action game titled, right on the nose, Chanbara (ちゃんばら); through fighting games like Samurai Shodown (サムライスピリッツ, 1993) and Bushido Blade (ブシドーブレード, 1997); to the ninja-infiltration action of Tenchu (天誅, 1998) and the recent Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (セキロ, 2019)—it would do no harm to file most action games with samurai and ninja as protagonists under the heading of chanbara games. After all, there is even a game like Onechanbara (お姉チャンバラ, 2004), billed as bishōjo-zombie action. To set the starting point of this genealogical sketch outside of games is only natural, since chanbara seeped into popular culture through the films (and a few novels) of the early twentieth century. In the lineage of exploitation—where a word first used as an insult settled into a genre as the works piled up—chanbara holds its place with confidence. Ghost of Tsushima (2020), the final exclusive for the PlayStation 4, and its successor Ghost of Yōtei (2025) can be called the most recent works of the chanbara genre as it has settled into popular culture. Nate Fox, the creative director of both games, has stated that he was influenced by the chanbara manga he read in childhood, such as Lone Wolf and Cub (子連れ狼, 1970–1976) and Usagi Yojimbo (兎用心棒, 1984–). I leave them unmentioned because it is not an area I know well, but anime like Samurai Champloo (サムライチャンプルー, 2004–2005) and manga like Bleach (ブリーチ, 2001–2016) and the recent mega-hit Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (鬼滅の刃, 2016–2020) can be said to profess the chanbara genre or to fall within its sphere of influence. When the American studio Sucker Punch announced it would make a chanbara game, that these would become its primary references was a matter of course. To bind into a single genealogy the chanbara scattered across the whole field of popular culture would be impossible. What can be drawn, though, is an unfinished genealogy that moves between film and game—the traits of chanbara one comes to feel while playing Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei , or the path running between the spaghetti Westerns and other Westerns born under chanbara's influence and the Japanese-style Westerns that branched off once that influence returned home to Japan. From Western to Chanbara, and Back to Western In a Japan where, after the defeat, the Occupation forces had banned the depiction of swordsmanship and other martial arts on film, the revival of the chanbara film came through Akira Kurosawa. Not long after the Occupation's censorship was lifted in 1952, Seven Samurai (七人の侍, 1954) was released. Because this was the Kurosawa who a few years earlier had taken the Grand Prix at the Venice International Film Festival with Rashomon (羅生門, 1950), another masterpiece from his hand at once captured the critics and the public alike. Kurosawa makes no secret that his chanbara films—the series of films starring Toshiro Mifune as a samurai—were influenced by the Hollywood Western. In the early twentieth century, when the chanbara film was gripping the Japanese public, the genre that flourished alongside it was unquestionably the Western. From the silent era through the postwar Occupation, the Western was the biggest film commodity not only in Japan but worldwide. Kurosawa, too, took the Westerns of this period as his chief motif. Seven Samurai (top) and How Green Was My Valley (bottom). The setup, for instance, of a near-rōnin samurai helping villagers face off against bandits immediately calls to mind a film like John Ford's My Darling Clementine (1946). Though not a Western, John Ford's How Green Was My Valley (1941) is also drawn upon for scenes in Seven Samurai . The scenes in Yojimbo (用心棒, 1961) and Sanjuro (椿三十郎, 1962), where the wandering rōnin departs right after the final duel, naturally summon up not only Ford's Stagecoach (1939) but George Stevens's Shane (1953) and Fred Zinnemann's High Noon (1952). Even in a war film like Throne of Blood (蜘蛛巣城, 1957) or an adventure like The Hidden Fortress (隠し砦の三悪人, 1958), Kurosawa put a katana in Mifune's hand and had him swing it. As John Wayne's figure functioned in Ford's films, Kurosawa made Mifune's feral aspect the emblem of the anti-hero in his own. As if in answer to the signal flare of chanbara's revival fired off by Kurosawa, several chanbara series appeared in succession. Zatoichi (座頭市, 1962), starring Shintaro Katsu, takes a blind swordsman as its protagonist and runs on through twenty-six sequels and a remake directed by and starring Takeshi Kitano. Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (子連れ狼 子を貸し腕貸しつかまつる, 1972), produced by the very Shintaro Katsu who played Zatoichi, was based on the manga of the same name and, recording a major hit, was made into six films and a TV drama. Alongside their popularity in Japan, these works were categorized—together with Hong Kong kung-fu/wuxia films and Korean kwŏn'gyŏk (fist-fighting) films—as "Asian martial arts films," and circulated worldwide in the form of pirated prints, unauthorized dubs, and recut versions. Of course, the films of the Venice Grand Prix laureate Akira Kurosawa were introduced around the world through official distribution networks and exerted great influence on Europe and Hollywood. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas put out Star Wars (1977), effectively a remake of The Hidden Fortress . In being a pseudo-Western set in space, this creates a strange genealogy in which the films of Kurosawa—who took John Ford as his cinematic master—pass through chanbara and circle back once more to the Western. A more direct uptake took place in Italy. A Fistful of Dollars (1964), produced by Sergio Leone with Clint Eastwood, lifts Yojimbo wholesale—so much so that there is an anecdote about Eastwood thinking of Yojimbo the moment he read the script. That said, Leone's spaghetti Western drags over only the shell of the chanbara film Kurosawa made. He takes only the components—the plot, the anti-hero character, the showdown—and makes a film of an entirely different character. Different, one might say, from Kurosawa's films, which transposed the way the John Ford Western depicts America into something Japanese. The similar compositions of Yojimbo (top) and A Fistful of Dollars (bottom). In any case, through Leone's films the Western entered a different phase. The outlaw anti-hero became the mainstream of the spaghetti Western, and the level of violence rose above that of the 1930s–50s Western—as in the machine-gun spraying of Sergio Corbucci's Django (1966). Hollywood, too, put out The Magnificent Seven (1960), a direct remake of Seven Samurai ; this drew notice for its glittering star casting, but the film's own impact was not large—though it did become a film that, together with spaghetti Westerns and revisionist Westerns like The Wild Bunch (1969), spawned countless imitators. The spaghetti Western, influenced by Kurosawa's chanbara films, returns to Japan once more—just as in 1970s Korea the Manchurian Western emerged under the influence of Leone's (and Kurosawa's) films. Juzo Itami's Tampopo (タンポポ, 1985), which hauls in a great heap of Western clichés, used "ramen Western" as its promotional tagline, displaying Japanese cinema's answer to the spaghetti Western. An anime conscious of the Western right down to its title, like Cowboy Bebop (カウボーイビバップ, 1998), recorded a major hit, and Takashi Miike, a master of Japanese genre film, even made it into the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival with Sukiyaki Western Django (スキヤキ・ウエスタン ジャンゴ, 2007). The manga Golden Kamuy (ゴールデンカムイ, 2014–2022), which reached its conclusion a few years ago, carried on the tradition of the Japanese Western too, setting itself in Hokkaido and featuring Ainu people as major characters. Chanbara as Cultural Melting Pot, or Chimera So… the work of drawing a genealogy that moves between Western and chanbara brings on a certain awkwardness. As one can see from the countless films mentioned above, drawing the genealogy of these films is possible, but it is no different from a maze in which one is bound at some point to lose the way. Genres mix across borders—as in Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman 唐人剣, 1971), the twenty-second film in the series, which attempted a kind of collaboration with the Hong Kong wuxia masterpiece The One-Armed Swordsman (獨臂刀, 1967)[2]—and, as seen above, diverse mutations are born within the repetition of a genre's import and re-import. Indeed, unlike Japan's pre-defeat chanbara films, which put bushido forward as their theme, the chanbara films after Kurosawa (as the revisionist Westerns did) exposed the cruel violence and toxic masculinity inherent in bushido, and at times revealed an aversion to the lingering traces of feudalism. Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri (切腹, 1962), which took ritual disembowelment as its material, and Bushido, Samurai Saga (武士道殘酷物語, 1963), which criticized the totalitarianism grounded in bushido, appeared around the same time as Kurosawa's chanbara films. Chanbara films critical of bushido continue to appear to this day: The Twilight Samurai (たそがれ清兵衛, 2002), portraying a fading samurai at the end of the Edo shogunate; Nagisa Oshima's Taboo (御法度, 1999), treating the male homosociality grounded in bushido; and, similarly, Takeshi Kitano's Kubi (首, 2023), treating the (sexual) violence within a samurai band of the Sengoku era. The Kill Bill poster, mixing Bruce Lee's yellow tracksuit with the chanbara katana (top), and the 47 Ronin poster, a representative case of conscripting the samurai as a symbol of Orientalism (bottom). On the other hand, in a situation where the figure of the samurai is no longer what it was, bushido migrates to objects that are not chanbara. The tokusatsu hero series Kamen Rider (仮面ライダー), begun in 1971, presents—for an older audience than other tokusatsu shows—a dark hero in a style resembling the chanbara film, or the spaghetti Western's outlaw. Some of the series' spin-offs even set out, with an adults-only rating in mind, chanbara-style gore and bloodshed. If inside Japan chanbara mutates into the tokusatsu hero, outside Japan chanbara becomes a representative symbol of Orientalism and Wapanism (the Western fetishization of things Japanese). In the spaghetti Western Red Sun (Sole rosso, 1972), featuring Toshiro Mifune, a samurai appears, out of nowhere, in the Western desert. In The Last Samurai (2003), starring Tom Cruise, the samurai is placed in exactly the position of the Western's "Indian." Tarantino's Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), which haphazardly blends chanbara with kung-fu film, blaxploitation, and more, pays homage to everything from Kurosawa's films to Zatoichi , Lady Snowblood (修羅雪姬, 1973), and Tattooed Life (刺靑一代, 1965).[3] Beyond such successful films, there are of course cases like 47 Ronin (2013), starring Keanu Reeves, or the villain "Silver Samurai" in The Wolverine (2013)—but such cases are, so to speak, without end. So: chanbara has now become a genre, or a representation, unrelated to bushido. What bushido can one feel in the duel between Wolverine and the Silver Samurai? Even if it were the bushido that Inazo Nitobe[4] Orientalistically distorted in Bushido: The Soul of Japan (1899). The bushido-flavored imagery shown by Arasaka in Cyberpunk 2077 (2020), for instance, is nothing more than imagery borrowed. The grotesque form of Adam Smasher, Arasaka's "kagemusha," is already set far apart from anything like bushido. Or take how, in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), Caine, played by Donnie Yen, reveals the strange contradiction of being a kung-fu master and at the same time the blind swordsman "Zatoichi." What is emphasized in samurai-led games like Samurai Shodown or Bushido Blade is not bushido but only "chanbara" swordplay and its pleasures. The imagery and characters left behind by the chanbara film keep being broken down into morphemes—mobilized for the genre or concept of the action—and reassembled, over and over. Adam Smasher, bodyguard of the Japanese corporation Arasaka in Cyberpunk 2077*. The armor encasing his body references the design of samurai armor. The katana in the capture is also a weapon you can make major use of in the game. Personally, I cleared my first playthrough using only the katana….* At that very point, the two chanbara games made by the American studio Sucker Punch come close to being cases that lay out, just as they are, the complex topography of the genealogy in which "chanbara" sits. Ghost of Tsushima , set in the Kamakura period, takes as its central material the Yuan dynasty's 1274 attempt to subjugate Tsushima. When Tsushima is suddenly overrun and occupied by the Mongol army, the game captures the process by which Jin Sakai—a samurai who alone survives the battle—abandons bushido and becomes the first shinobi (ninja). Because, in the face of the Mongol army's overwhelming force, responding while keeping to bushido is impossible. In this story, the clichés accumulated in moving between chanbara and Western do not work all that much. The protagonist is not a rōnin or outlaw like Toshiro Mifune or Clint Eastwood, and, depicted as the nephew of the lord who governs Tsushima, he is in his own way a man of power. The only chanbara/Western element within this story, one might say, is the point at which he casts off bushido and becomes a kind of anti-hero, "the Ghost." Its successor Ghost of Yōtei , set in Hokkaido, far more actively draws in a chanbara/Western mood. Music that sounds like Ennio Morricone-style Western scores played on instruments like the shamisen; the vast Hokkaido landscape that has already served as the backdrop for many a Japanese Western; a rōnin protagonist returning home with reasons of her own—from story to setting, in many directions, it evokes the cinematic genealogies mentioned above more than its predecessor did. On top of that, many striking elements are scattered throughout: the "standoff" combat system in both games pulls in the shot composition of the showdown that ran from Yojimbo to A Fistful of Dollars , and so on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbB3EUruQ4U Footage of Ghost of Yōtei played with Kurosawa, Miike, and Watanabe Modes all switched on. A hybrid situation unfolds: a black-and-white screen mimicking a film look, drenched in excessive blood, while jazzy music plays. But how can the two games be positioned atop the chanbara/Western genealogy described above? Intriguingly, both games reveal their own hybrid identity through the modes they themselves provide. If Ghost of Tsushima has a "Kurosawa Mode" offering a black-and-white image and sound with a texture resembling Akira Kurosawa's films, Ghost of Yōtei has modes taken, respectively, from Takashi Miike of Sukiyaki Western Django and Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo . In Miike Mode the blood and mud spray all the more; in Watanabe Mode the Western-ish music is swapped for lo-fi contemporary music. To play the game with all three modes switched on would be an experience that lets you take in the accumulated genealogy of the chanbara genre all at once. Playing Ghost of Yōtei in that state is quite a chore, admittedly…. Seen from the standpoint of bushido, Jin Sakai of Ghost of Tsushima and Atsu of Ghost of Yōtei are figures converging on a midpoint from opposite directions. Jin Sakai, a samurai grounded in bushido, gradually abandons it after defeat and becomes the first shinobi. Atsu, who burned with vengeance from the start, comes (without becoming a samurai) to understand bushido a little, through her companions the "Wolf Pack" and, above all, through her reunion with Jubei, the twin younger brother she had not known was alive. But this is no more than an alibi to keep the narrative running. To dig deep and analyze these stories is closer to exhuming the stale spirituality called bushido. And what we would then find would likely be a figure like an oni, rotted here and there. Chanbara = Parrying? Bushido has been reduced to an object of discard or critique, and the samurai and ninja have been taxidermied—from a thoroughly Orientalist gaze—into mere popular-culture icons. The center of gravity binding them together seems all but gone. So what, then, do the works that can be bound together as "chanbara" have in common? Here we need to return once more to the etymology. It is worth attending to the fact that what audiences went wild for in the early-twentieth-century Japanese costume dramas disparaged as chanbara was, rather than bushido, the swordplay itself. The so-called tachimawari (立ち回り)—the staged melee—comes close to the heart of chanbara. After all, even the etymology of chanbara is the compounding of onomatopoeia depicting blades clashing and blood scattering. The final duel of Sanjuro (top)—chanbara itself—and a standoff scene from Ghost of Yōtei (bottom). Translate the onomatopoeia "chanchan barabara" into a game mechanic and you get parrying. Indeed, the game known as the first to feature parrying is the samurai fighting game Samurai Shodown II (真SAMURAI SPIRITS 覇王丸地獄変, 1994). Parrying as a game mechanic then began to be used mainly in fighting games like Killer Instinct 2 (1996) and the Tekken series (鉄拳, 1994–). The technique of parrying itself, of course, existed from the Middle Ages in Western swordsmanship and in sports like fencing; but chanbara's influence is immense in its becoming established as a game mechanic. Parrying in Samurai Shodown II (top) and a parrying GIF from Sekiro (bottom). Today parrying can be found not only in fighting games but in nearly every action game—whether the game uses bladed weapons and shields or centers on fists and kicks. Even in a JRPG-style turn-based game like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025), where combat and magic mingle, parrying has come to be used as the single most important system. What popularized the parry system across action games today was, in all likelihood, the games of FromSoftware. In Dark Souls (2011), the dull sound effect that appeared on a successful parry was essential to the "riposte," the critical follow-up that lets you deal heavy damage. But befitting a game famous for its punishing difficulty, from Dark Souls through Elden Ring (2022) parrying was less a tool every player needed than an optional play-style for veterans. The intriguing case is Sekiro . While it keeps its distance from FromSoftware's orthodox Souls line, in this game—which foregrounds a single weapon and a Posture system—the single most important action is parrying. Memorizing the enemy's attack patterns wholesale and knocking them back (in-game the action is rendered not as "parry" but as "deflect") makes up most of the action, to the point where players call it a rhythm game. The method of filling the enemy's Posture gauge through deflects, breaking their stance, and landing a single blow left as strong an impression as the Dark Souls series, and created a fad of another kind. What is more, the "shinobi-kill" (忍殺) Deathblow—dispatching the opponent with a single strike after trading blows blade to blade—immediately evokes the iconic final scene of Sanjuro . Parrying in Ghost of Yōtei. Ghost of Tsushima , too, adopts a similar system. Of course, since its release date is only about a year apart from Sekiro 's, there would not have been enough time to borrow Sekiro's system directly. But Ghost of Tsushima likewise has nearly the same construction of action mechanic—breaking the opponent's stance through a parry and landing a single blow. The differences are only that it has more moments of one-against-many combat than Sekiro , and that the action is built around learning various swordsmanship stances and responding according to the opponent's weapon (katana, spear, shield, and so on). This is not greatly different in Ghost of Yōtei ; the only difference is that Jin Sakai's various swordsmanship stances are replaced, for Atsu, by various weapons—the ōdachi, the kusarigama, the spear, the dual blades, and more. In the "standoff," one of the game's systems, the figures of protagonist and enemy glaring at each other belong to chanbara but at the same time to the Western. From the vantage of the 2020s it is impossible to tell them apart. That the stages of both games handle regions outside Japan's "mainland"—Tsushima and Hokkaido—is surely a clear Western influence. Ghost of Tsushima , which chooses the thirteenth century rather than the Sengoku era, and Ghost of Yōtei , which treats the Sengoku era and mentions great battles like Sekigahara yet stands one step removed from their center, draw in the Western by way of avoiding the chanbara film's two principal settings (the Sengoku era and the Edo shogunate). What makes the two games chanbara, though, is that their action follows the parry-based manner of the chanbara film. That parrying as a game mechanic emerged under chanbara's influence, the two games faithfully inherit. So, in the end, the core of the two games is this: that they are swordfighting games. From top: the final duel of Yojimbo, the duel of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), and a standoff scene from Ghost of Tsushima. The similarity of composition runs through them. Merely by richly providing the pleasure of action one can expect from a chanbara action game, the two games are a success. The Western-style atmosphere that settled into Hokkaido by way of the spaghetti Western from chanbara, the narrative of a wandering, outlaw anti-hero—these are no more than a set of shells needed to render chanbara action vividly. Picked apart in detail, these shells are not even sufficiently "real." The Yuan subjugation of Tsushima, the chief motif of Ghost of Tsushima , involved not only Mongol forces but Goryeo (Korean) troops, who do not appear in the game. The design of Jin Sakai's armor and katana follows the Sengoku era rather than the thirteenth-century Kamakura era—because that is the image of the samurai more familiar to those who will play the game. That Ghost of Yōtei , unlike other games set in the Sengoku era, takes Hokkaido as its stage is to present a plausible backdrop for a lone individual, Atsu, to defeat the Saitō clan and the Yōtei Six; beyond that, a reason is hard to find. The construction of the finished game comes closer to the result of selecting the options through which a fitting chanbara-action tachimawari can be played and felt via the PlayStation DualShock/DualSense. In that context, atop the genealogy that the genre named "chanbara" has formed across all sorts of media, Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei are, paradoxically, composed of elements that lay out one by one the path chanbara has traveled. The traces of bushido as a national project; the motifs and clichés developed in exchange with the Western; parrying, the chanbara of game mechanics. Chanbara is a genre of the Japanese popular-culture tradition and, at the same time, has become a cultural icon whose traces can be found in any country on earth. At any rate, the two works—American games both—confirm this anew. [1] Kim Ryeo-sil, Ilbon yeonghwa-wa naesyeoneollijeum [Japanese Cinema and Nationalism] (Seoul: Chaeksesang, 2005), 28. [3] Strictly speaking, the protagonist is a yakuza rather than a samurai, but the swordfight of the latter half, captured in long takes, can be said to follow the chanbara template.
