Announcement: The 5th GameGeneration Game Criticism Contest

GameGeneration holds an annual Game Criticism Contest to invigorate the criticism of digital games in Korea and to discover new writers, and we are pleased to announce the 2026 contest as follows. We look forward to the participation of all who are interested.


■ Format and How to Enter

  • Topic | Criticism of a digital game (subtopic open; see existing GG articles and past winning entries for reference)

  • File format | Submit as a word-processor file (HWP, DOC, etc.). Include the title and author's name in the filename.

  • Length | Approximately 4,000–8,000 characters (no more than 5 images).

  • How to submit | Send to the contest email (ggcriticcomp@gmail.com).


■ Awards

  • Around 4 winning entries will be selected and awarded.

  • Prize and certificate: 1.2 million KRW per entry (pre-tax, manuscript fee included).

  • The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at G-STAR 2026 (Busan, expected November).

  • Winning entries will be published in GG issue 32 (October 2026).


■ Schedule

  • Fri, Sep 11, 2026 — Submission deadline (by 23:59 KST)

  • Fri, Oct 2, 2026 — Judging completed and results announced

  • Thu, Oct 10, 2026 — Winning entries published in GG

  • Nov 2026 — Award ceremony held during G-STAR (details to be announced separately once confirmed)


■ Notes

  • Submitted manuscripts will not be returned.

  • Upon publication in GG, winning entries are treated the same as GG articles: they are reproduced under GG and may not be contributed to other outlets.

  • Entries are limited to one work per person; submitting more than one may result in a penalty.

  • Past winners of the GG contest are excluded from selection.

  • All entries undergo a plagiarism check; if plagiarism is found, the award may be revoked even after selection.

Game critic and researcher. Since 2015, he has made games his life's work—as a critic, examining how games relate to society, and as a researcher, exploring how games, as commodities, take their place within it. He is the author of Mario, Born in '81 (2017) and The Birth of In-Game Spending (2022), among other works, and has contributed to documentaries including EBS's Docuprime as well as columns across various outlets. He received his PhD from the Graduate School of Communication at Yonsei University for his research analyzing digital games as time-rights commodities. He is the director of the game research lab Dragon Lab and serves as editor-in-chief of Game Generation.
